8 steps to Cancer prevention
80% of the cases can be cured if detected early. Cancer prevention and early detection, therefore becomes of primary significance. ICICI Lombard presents eight golden rules to cancer prevention:
Step 1: Say no to Tobacco
1/3rds of all cancers is caused by tobacco and is responsible for nearly 50% of the cancer in men. Avoiding tobacco in any form significantly reduces your risk of several cancers, including:
Lung
Esophagus
Voice box (larynx)
Mouth
Bladder
Kidney
Pancreas
Cervix
Stomach
Acute myeloid leukemia
Chewing tobacco also increases the risk of cancers of the mouth, cheeks and gums.
Step 2: Healthy Diet
Micronutrients in the diet: A diet rich in vitamins A, C, E, calcium and Selenium, fibres and fruits and vegetables would help to prevent cancer. Particularly antioxidant vitamins play a pivotal role to enhance several protective mechanisms against carcinogens - Nutrient Intervention Study
Limit fat: High-fat diets may increase your risk of cancers of the prostate, colon, rectum and uterus.

A woman who has two standard drinks a day (two glasses of wine or two nips of spirit) increases her risk of breast cancer by more than 50 per cent. |
Avoid spices: Use of chili powder was identified as a risk factor for all sites of cancer with dose-response effects in the upper aerodigestive tract.
Step 3: Exercise
Obesity may be a risk factor for cancers of the prostate, colon, rectum, uterus, ovaries and breast. Exercise at least four hours a week. It need not be strenuous activity. Brisk walking is recommended.
Step 4: Protect from Sun
Skin cancer is one of the most common kinds of cancer — and one of the most preventable. The sun's ultraviolet (UV) radiati
