Better Battery lead to a smooth drive

Maintaining the electrical system of a car is also very essential for trouble free service from the car. The primary purpose of a car battery is to START the engine. Regular upkeep leads to a longer and better engine performance. ICICI Lombard brings you basic steps of preventive maintenance and tips to buying a better battery.

Prevent Corrosion of Battery Terminals
Water levels in the cells should be just above the level of lead plates. During summer, the water level should be checked every week. Deposits of copper sulphate should be removed with hot water or sand or emery paper and apply petroleum jelly later. This helps prevent corrosion.

Terminal upkeep for longer battery life Be sure to have terminal clamps tight and proper caps on it. Also ensure that the cell’s caps are firm and not cracked or broken. Vents should always be clear for the battery to breathe properly. If one is not using the vehicle for a long period of a month or so then remove the terminals from the battery. This prevents the discharge and prolongs the life of the battery.

Check the alternator
The alternator in the car plays a crucial role in the current system as it recharges the battery and provides current when the engine is running. If your battery and alternator are working fine, then the starter too should work fine.

Regular servicing
When the car goes for regular servicing, it will be a good exercise to inspect all the wiring and the terminals and circuit system as well as the main fuse box.

Proper Caution: Batteries contain a sulfuric acid electrolyte which is a highly corrosive poison, that will emit gas when recharged and explode if ignited.

When working with batteries, you need to have plenty of ventilation, remove jewelry, wear protective clothing and eye wear (safety glasses), and exercise caution. Whenever possible, please follow the manufacturer's instructions for testing, jumping, installing and charging.

What to look for when buying a new battery?

Battery buying strategy will vary based on climatic conditions. In the colder climates, higher CCA ratings are more important; whereas, in a hot climate, a higher RC ratings are of more importance. Requirement.

CCA Rating: Cold Cranking Amps (CCA)
In hot climates, buying batteries with double or triple the CCA ratings that exceed the OEM requirement is a WASTE of money. However, in colder climates the higher CCA rating the better, due to increased power required to crank a sluggish engine and the inefficiency of the cold battery. As batteries age, they are less capable of producing CCAs.

RC Rating: Reserve Capacity (RC)
The second most important consideration is the Reserve Capacity rating. RC is the number of minutes a fully charged battery at 80 degrees F (26.7 degrees C) can be discharged at 25 amps until the voltage falls below 10.5 volts.] More RC is better in every case! In a hot climate, for example, if your car has a 360 OEM cranking amp requirement, then a 400 CCA rated battery with 120 minute RC with more electrolyte would be more desirable than one with 1000 CCA with 90 minutes of RC.

Fresher the better: NEVER buy a battery that is MORE than SIX months old because it is starting to sulfate.
