If you belong to a flood prone area, take these necessary steps to lessen the potential of flood damage.

Enter the flooded area only when the authorities deem it safe.

Watch out for drowned power lines and report any immediately to the concerned authority.

Inspect foundations for damage.

Enter your home carefully. Wear sturdy shoes and use battery-powered lanterns or flashlights to examine buildings.

Examine the building thoroughly and make sure there is no danger of a collapse.

Watch out for animals, especially poisonous snakes that may have come in with the floodwaters. Use a stick to turn over debris.

Look for fire hazards, including broken or leaking gas lines, flooded electrical circuits, submerged furnaces or electrical appliances, or flammable or explosive materials coming from upstream.

Discard all the food, including canned, that might have come in contact with the contaminated water.

Pump out flooded basements gradually, not more than one-third of the water per day, to avoid structural damage.

Service damaged septic tanks and sewage systems immediately.

Damaged sewage systems are health hazards.

Check for gas leaks. If you have nay doubts, contact the gas company immediately.

Check for electrical damage. If you notice sparks or damaged wiring, turn off the electricity at the main fuse box. If you have to step in water to get to the fuse box or circuit breaker, call a professional immediately.

Check for sewage and water line damage. If there appears to be damage, call the water company and avoid using water or toilets until they arrive.

Take pictures of the damage to help facilitate your insurance claim.
