Getting there

Airways Apart from the San Francisco International Airport, there are two other major airports in close proximity- the San Jose International Airport and the Oakland International Airport. From these airports, you may avail shuttles, taxis etc. to your hotels. The BART (The Bay Area Rapid Transit rail system) is possibly the best transport to take from the airports.
Railroad system US Railway system of Amtrak connects San Francisco to the rest of the country. The main Bay area terminal is the Jack London Square. From here take the free shuttle service to San Francisco's Caltrain Station and Embarcadero's Ferry building. The Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART, the rail system) connects San Francisco to the East Bay cities of Fremont, Berkeley, Oakland, Dublin, Walnut Creek and others. They are reasonable and provide quick as well as dependable transportation to shopping areas, offices, entertainment zones, tourist attractions and other such destinations.
Bus Although several companies operate in the area, the safest bet is the Greyhound buses. The main terminal is Transbay at Soma. Get yourself the Muni pass, which will allow you unlimited traveling on Muni Transport network. You may get these passes from hotels, Visitor Information Centers and stores with Muni signboard.

Traveling further and up to Wine Country however, a car is one of the best options. |

Tram The open-air old-fashioned tram ride or San Francisco Municipal Railway (Muni) helps you to commute to the three downtown San Francisco routes. These routes are comprehensive, well knit and promises a lot of excitement. In Downtown, the BART and Muni stations are the same.
Ferry Within San Francisco commute via a ferry from the Embarcadero Ferry Building and Fisherman's Wharf to either Oakland, Sausalito, Alameda, Tiburon and bay islands.
