 | Since 1996, strong evidence regarding a relationship between cattle disease bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE or mad cow disease) andvariant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (vCJD), in humans has emerged. Both BSE and vCJD are fatal brain diseases. The vCJD occurs when contaminated (with BSE agent) cattle products are consumed. Recent case-control study shows that it depends upon the consumption frequency of beef products that contain head meat (burgers, sausages etc.) or mechanically recovered meat. Between 1995 and mid-August 2006, a total of 195 vCJD cases were reported, of which 162 were from U.K. |
