Las Vegas Travel Tips

 | Located in South-eastern part of Nevada, Las Vegas falls in the Pacific time zone and on an average has 300 days of sunshine in an year. The months from June to September are comparatively warmer at maximum temperature hovering around 35 C to 39 C and minimum at approximately 15 C to 20C.  | If you are booked in either Hilton, MGM Grand, Ballys, New York New York, Flamingo, Caesars Palace or Paris, check-in into your hotel (get the keys too) from the airport itself, while you wait for your baggages to arrive and thus save precious time! |
 | If you are traveling in a group of six and more or find fellow travelers heading in the same area, rent a limousine ($55 -$65) from the airport to your hotel, cost would be approximately $10 per person. Yes, shuttle buses (few companies here are ACL, Showtime, Star, Bell) are cheaper at $5-$7 but they are time consuming and taxis will be roughly $ 15 to $20. So why take a cab when you can travel royally in a limo. Still, if you opt for a cab, tell the driver to avoid the freeway as it will considerably increase the fares. |
 | Room rates fluctuate like a pendulum in this city. Check rates for a week in advance and also a week later than your intended stay- the rates could be very different. It is almost impossible and the rates are also sky-high if you want a room during major conventions and functions (if too many are happening), sporting events etc. Friday and Saturday rates are expensive and far higher than those from Monday to Wednesday. Plan your trip accordingly. Most hotels provide a reduced casino rates, so if you intend to gamble a lot, try and get the room rent waived at least. |
 | If you have taken your kids along for a holiday, Treasure Island,Circus Circus and Excalibur are good hotel options. |
 | As most service related positions are low-paying, tips are important for modest lifestyle for these people, so please do tip. The list includes- doormen, bellboys, chambermaids, waitresses, casino dealers, shuttle bus and cab drivers, room service staff, parking attendants etc. |
 | Ask your hotel's concierge to provide you with a copy of "What's On," a free magazine with detailed updates of all on goings in and around Las Vegas. |
 | Find detailed routes of free shuttles or paid buses plying between different regions and take your pick accordingly. |
 | Do carry a comfortable pair of shoes for walking- you will surely need them- not only within your hotel (lot of hotels cover huge areas and the entertainment activities are spread out) but also outside. |
 | Make conscious efforts to drink lots of water in Las Vegas as the dry weather there may cause dehydration. |
 | Use crosswalks in Las Vegas and only when "Walk" signs are on. Jay-walking invites a fine of $95. Drive or walk with extra caution in the Strip area as it could be risky there. |
 | Although Las Vegas is a fairly safe place, never walk from the Strip to Fremont Street or vice versa, there are too few people even during daytime. |
 | While walking on the Strip, you may come across people distributing brochures and advertisements for massage parlors, escort services etc., do not bother taking them or acknowledging their presence. |
 | Although always carry a copy of your identification document, ensure that it is neither your social security card or a document bearing your social security number. The identification has to be produced in the casinos if you score a jackpot. |
 | If you went overboard while shopping and are unable to fit it all in, visit Flamingo Hotel's UPS Store, which will ship all your extras to the mentioned destination. On your receipt will be the tracking number and you may check your goods' status on mbe.com. UPS Store closes at 5:00 P.M. On weekends and 7 P.M. on weekdays. |
