New York Travel Tips

New York City does not have any specific “best time” to visit. It has something to offer throughout and you can schedule your visit according to your interest. For a culture enthusiast fall, winter and early spring are best as it is peak season for theater and performing-arts. Summers too provide great entertainment for them. Foodies must visit in July and August (that's when New Yorkers take a break from the city). Spring and fall sights are pretty with extremely pleasant weather. Basically, whatever be the season or the reason, New York is always on the move and a lovely place to visit.

From early-December to New Year's, it is an absolute party city. The terrific seasonal sales also make it the top shopping destination. However, the flip side is that the hotels become expensive, streets are crowded and there is lesser accessibility to museums and other attractions. Take a call and plan accordingly.

New York is among America's most expensive cities in terms of hotel room rates.

If you are on an economy budget, go between January and April when the season is slow and you may strike a decent bargain.

Although a large city, walking it in stretches is one of the best ways to discover, understand and enjoy this beautiful place.

Tips are high and almost compulsory in New York City. Tip $1 to $ 2 for each drink, room maids $2 to $5, taxi drivers approximately 20 percent, restaurants 15 to 20 percent, 15 percent to hairdressers, coat checkers $1 etc.

Always confirm the actual cost before booking a room. Usually the hotel rates do not include the 8.25 percent sales tax, 5 percent hotel tax and $2 fee per room per night.

There are no sales tax on prescription drugs, food from grocery stores, footwear and clothing below $110.

When driving in New York City always remember that there are no left turns on a red light.

When you leave Penn Station or Grand Central Terminal, avoid any "taxi dispatcher" or person pretending to work with a taxi company guide you anywhere. They might fleece as well as rob you.

Subways are among the best means of transport, but avoid it during rush hours. You might find it difficult to manage in the crowd.

Buy MetroCards only from the teller at the stations or machines. A MetroCard from any other source is likely to be fake or empty.

Though New York is an extremely safe city, it is always recommended that one is cautious and travels smart especially in subways. Do not flash your valuables. Cover your jewelry and put dial down and strap up for expensive watches. Keep small change handy in a pocket and keep bulk of cash in your wallet.

A subway car is never empty without a reason so do not board one (if totally empty).

Do not let a stranger come too close to your handbag, camera etc. Avoid eye contact with any person who looks threatening.

If you are suspicious of your surroundings, walk or behave confidently and don't give yourself away as a tourist. New Yorkers will generally help, so make proper judgment of people and ask them for directions.

An integral part of New York lifestyle are the numerous street vendors selling the popular hotdogs, pretzels, grilled kebabs, chestnuts etc. They are perfectly safe to eat, extremely deliciously and are comparatively cheap. Select a vendor who has several customers waiting rather than an idle one.

The New York City never halts and is always in a hurry. Whether you are walking up/down a street, an escalator etc. keep moving and stay to your right. A sudden stop hampers the pedestrian flow.

Parking in New York can be tough and confusing with alternate side of street rules on different week days. Contact the New York City Department of Transportation for rules on traffic and parking.

New York City hosts several street fairs, parades and special events, which can can result in road closures. Be up-to-date with such information.

In case of emergency call 911.
