While shifting in to your house don't leave your loaded car/van unattended.
When moving into your new place, try and avoid jamming security gates, front or internal doors open.
Be aware of people attempting to enter with you. If you are not sure about them, call security.
Lock your room whenever you are not around, even if it is just for a few minutes.
Make sure that all of your valuables are insured so that you are not left stranded in case of an unforeseen incident.
Cash and Cards
Don't count/ flash your cash in public.
Reduce the withdrawal limit on your card to the minimum. It will stop a thief withdrawing your whole balance.
Withdraw what you need for the day/ night and leave your card locked up somewhere safe.
If you can, withdraw your cash in daylight. If not, take a friend with you to the cash point. It is advisable to use cash back facilities at shops.
Find out the cancellation number for your cards. Write it down in your diary, program it into your phone or leave it somewhere you know you'll find it easily when you're in a panic.
Personal Safety
General advice
The first few weeks are tough. You will meet lots of new people and will want to make a good impression, but don't feel pressured. If you are not comfortable with a situation then get out of it as soon as you can.
Do not go into a flat/house, get into a car or go out with someone you don't know that well or don't trust.
Avoid going out alone late at night, try and meet people as close to where you live as you can. If not, then call a good cab company and get a taxi.
Walking
Don't feel shy to ask your friends to walk you home. It is preferable to feel a bit embarrassed than to find yourself in a threatening situation.
Look like you know where you are going even if you don't.
Walk tall with your shoulders back and look alert, a confident stance is known to make a potential attacker think twice.
Whether you are male or female it's a good idea to carry a personal attack alarm. Keep it in your hand, not at the bottom of your bag, when walking.
Keep to well lit, busy roads and steer clear of short cuts/parks that you are not familiar with, even in daylight.
Public Transport
Try and sit close to the driver/ guard where possible.
Avoid empty top decks/ train carriages.
Try and arrange for someone to meet you from the station/ bus stop when ever possible.
Pubs and Clubs
Never leave drinks unattended in pubs or clubs. When you go anywhere for a few minutes, ask your friends to keep an eye on your drink.
Try to have your drinks in bottles and cover the top with your thumb when walking around.
If you suspect your drink has been adulterated, contact a member of staff or tell a trusted friend.
