Building a Robust Healthcare System

December 30 2016
Robust Healthcare System

In a recent health insurance conclave, members of the insurance industry presented their ideas on bringing coherence in the diverse healthcare system of India. The conclave that took place in Mumbai was centred on building a robust healthcare system in the country. The easiest way to achieve it is to provide customers clarity on various health insurance products.

The panel comprised of several experts from reputed firms including Mr. Bhargav Dasgupta, MD and CEO, ICICI Lombard General Insurance Company. The panel discussed on ‘Getting healthcare to work for individuals’ and put forward their ideas and concerns on different ways to bring clarity in the health care system.

According to Mr. Dasgupta, ICICI Lombard has close to 4,000 hospitals where customers can avail cashless services. Based on the services provided by the company, they have negotiated a package rate with their partner hospitals. However, the unnecessary surgeries that happen in collusion with the provider are a worrying factor.

Another important issue is of differential pricing. According to Mr. Dasgupta, a customer must be aware of the particulars of the policy, coverage, and pricing. Thereafter, how the insurer deal with the service provider should not bother a customer. He also added that in order to serve customers well, there is a need to remove blatant frauds and strike a balance with package rates.
