Flash Floods Strike Assam

August 24 2015

Heavy rains over past few days have caused flash floods in Assam. Nearly two lakh people in seven districts have been affected. The Brahmaputra is flowing above its danger mark and a flood warning has been issued to all districts.

In all, 12,000 hectares of cropland is submerged under water. Kokrajhar district has been hit severely with 87 villages being affected by the floods. A massive landslide triggered at Thansen and Ratachara on National Highway No.6 by continuous rainfall in Meghalaya has disconnected southern Assam, Tripura, Mizoram, and parts of Manipur from rest of the country.

Roads, bridges and other infrastructure have been damaged. The authorities are allocating resources to clear the debris. 45 relief camps are set up in Kokrajhar, Bongaigaon and Chirang, where almost 17,500 citizens have taken shelter. Heavy rainfall in Arunachal Pradesh and Bhutan has resulted in rivers in those areas to flow above the danger mark. Nepal and the state of Bihar are also on high alert for flash floods.
