Lower Income Is the Biggest Cause of Worry: Survey

April 11 2017
Lower Income Is the Biggest Cause of Worry

A total of 1,100 men and women in different age categories (22-50 years) in India participated in the study.

In the wake of growing concerns around mental health and related illnesses, the general insurance company ICICI Lombard recently conducted an online survey to assess the indicators of mental wellness.

A total of 1,100 men and women in different age categories (22-50 years) in India participated in the study. The study found that while lack of sleep was the leading cause of poor mental wellness, more than half of the respondents in the survey also said that income-related issues caused them maximum worries in their professional life.

Mental Wellness

Apart from this, it was also found that respondents from tier 1 locations had the lowest levels of mental wellness; those from tier 3 cities scored highest in terms of wellness.

However, it was also found that the younger survey participants indicated lower levels of mental wellness. Among those who were 31 years or older, about 55% showed symptoms of depression. This number was 60% in the 26-30 years age group, but higher at 65% in the youngest age category of 22-25 years.

The survey further revealed that in professional life, lower income is the biggest reason of worry, competition at work (24%) and low performance (21%) were the other main reasons that caused anxiety among the respondents.

In terms of gender, women respondents fared better than their male counterparts. The overall mental wellness levels among women was found to be higher (66%) than men (55%).

The online survey was conducted on the occasion of World Health Day on 7 April.
