Riding in India entails more than just having your hands on your bike. There are numerous traffic and road safety laws that you must follow. You must learn about various traffic signals, speed restrictions in various locations, and the meaning of multiple signboards.

Besides this, the law mandates you to carry various documents in your bike's top box. You must carry your registration certificate, pollution control certificate, driver's license, and proof of bike insurance. You may face a penalty if the traffic authorities discover you riding without any mandatory papers.

However, it is a common occurrence that we forget to bring these documents with us when we are in a rush. To assist us in such a situation, the government has introduced the concept of digital papers. As per the Central Motor Vehicle Rules amendment, electronically saved documents are now acceptable.

Keeping your Documents in DigiLocker App

DigiLocker is a cloud-based platform that provides a digital wallet to every citizen of India. The initiative was launched as part of the Digital India drive by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology in 2015. It aims to provide paperless governance and enable citizens to store and access their lifelong documents anywhere and anytime electronically without risk of loss or damage.

You can use DigiLocker to store and access your bike documents online. To do so, you need to follow these steps:

  • In the Uploaded Documents section, you can upload your bike insurance policy document if it has not been issued by any registered issuers on the DigiLocker platform. You can upload your document by scanning it or taking a photo of it using your smartphone camera. You can also upload it from your device storage or other cloud storage services like Google Drive or Dropbox.
  • Once you have stored your bike insurance policy document in DigiLocker, you can access it anytime by logging into your account. You can also share it with others by generating a secure link or QR code.
