Things to Do in Netherlands

Who wouldn't love a place with a visionary architecture, contemporary interiors, streets smelling of flower fragrance and an evening at a canal side bistro? Perhaps, this is what brings every traveller to Netherlands at least once in a lifetime. Here are the top places in the country that you must visit along with the things you can do there.

  • Amsterdam:

The tales of legendary Norwegian Sondre Norheim, often credited as the pioneer of modern skiing, are widespread in Norway. Skiing is deep rooted in Norwegian traditions and rituals. If you want to enjoy it, try a cross-country skiing trip in a forest. Carry your lunch along with foam pads to sit and ask a local to get the details right.

While in Amsterdam, you must take an early morning walk around Prinsengracht. You can't afford to miss the local cafes and bars. The city is like a hidden garden where you can wander all day out and no matter where you go you will always end up in a cafe or a canal!

  • Hague:

Seat of the Dutch government and home to the royal family, Hague is a regal city filled with mansions and embassies. It was the Dutch capital prior to 1806, which was later shifted to Amsterdam. However, the government returned to Hague, but the capital status remained with Amsterdam.

If you are interested in monuments, palaces and museums then Hague is the place for you. You can visit Madurodam, Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, Binnenhof, Peace Palace, Escher Museum, Louwman Museum and Drievliet, an amusement park with rides for all ages.

  • Eindhoven:

A small and simple village till 1900, Eindhoven grew exponentially, thanks to the electronics giant Philips. Since its formation in 1891, the city has grown to become the fifth largest city in Netherlands. With its top rated technology institutes, the city remains to be a centre of knowledge throughout the world.

The place is for tech-enthusiasts and the annual Dutch Design Week that takes place in the White Lady (Ex-Philips factory) in October attracts few frugal travellers. The city has a buzzing nightlife and you can hang out in a nightclub or bar. You can even spend your evening shopping on the streets followed by al fresco dining.

  • Rotterdam:

Rotterdam is the face of modern Netherlands. Futuristic architecture, inner city canal surfing, vibrant nightlife and a surge of drinking and dining makes it one of the most happening cities in Europe. The second largest metropolis in the country is a melting pot for various cultures and ethnicities.

Rotterdam is the busiest port in Europe and a reflection of Netherlands prosperity. You must visit the Erasmus Bridge, local museums, and churches. Also, hang out in one of the most exciting nightclubs in the country.

I am glad that we purchased the travel insurance from ICICI Lombard. We planned a family trip a year in advance to Schengen countries starting from Netherlands. When we arrived in Amsterdam, sadly my youngest daughter was infected with flu. The doctor advised her 3-day stay in hospital and we had to pay a hefty consultation fees and other medical expenses. ICICI Lombard made the refund for medical expenses so easily and we got every single rupee that we spent on the medical expenses.

Our connecting flight from London to Amsterdam was cancelled due to bad weather. Instead, we had to take a flight from Manchester to Rotterdam. We ultimately had to hire a car from London to Manchester. I thought I would never get a refund for car rentals. But when I submitted the online form and applied, I got the refund within a few weeks. Thanks to ICICI Lombard's prompt service.
