August 21 2015

According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), India witnesses 377 deaths and 1,287 injuries per day, due to road accidents. In 2014, 4.79 lakh people sustained injuries from road accidents. The primary causes for road accidents are attributed to rash driving and road rage.

In a recent study based on the cases registered in the state police stations, it was observed that 22,321 people were injured in Kerala due to road accidents in 2015. The state's commercial capital Kochi and the political capital Thiruvananthapuram top the chart in the list of cases registered for rash driving and road rage, followed by Chennai and Delhi.

Sources cite that increase in the number of vehicles and less road space are the main reasons for rash driving in Kerala, where 1.09 lakh cases were registered in 2014. In the same period, Lakshadweep reported only a single incident of accident due to road rage.

Across 53 major Indian cities, at least 99,822 people were injured in road accidents in 2015. Out of the 96,648 registered accident cases in India, Kochi contributes to almost 13%.
