Eye Patients Suffering from Pterygium Find a Novel Treatment in Kolkata

May 30 2012

A new surgical method called "Auto Blood Conjunctivital Graft Fixation" has been introduced in an eye hospital in Kolkata to treat patients suffering from Pterygium with their blood.

Pterygium is a fibro vascular tissue in the shape of a wing that encroaches on the cornea from the nasal or temporal side, and causes irritation, visual disturbance and redness of eye.

Santanu Mitra, the Senior Consultatnt for Cataract and Occuloplasty services at Disha Eye Hospitals and Research Center, Kolkata said, " In order to provide the benefits of glue adhesive to the patients minus the drawbacks, the idea of using natural blood clot as tissue adhesive was derived".

"Once the Pteryium is excised and the recipient bed is bare, a thin film of blood oozing in the surgical field is allowed to form clot over the area. Then the graft is harvested and is aligned over the clotted blood, this is what we call the 'no suture no glue' graft fixation technique," added Mitra.

Some of the causative factors cited behind the occurrence of the disease are the exposure to ultraviolet radiation, tropical atmosphere, excess outdoor exposure to sunlight and wind etc.

Due to the high recurrence rate or the blinding side effect, various surgical procedures that were tried in the past were gradually discarded. Grafting with the health conjunctiva harvested from some other part of the eye and the usage of fibrin glue as the adhesive fixative for the conjunctival graft fixation are two of the most popular methods for the treatment of Pterygium.

However according to Mitra both the treatments suffer from some side effects as the first one can leave behind symptoms like pain, redness of the eye, watering and foreign body sensation as the fibre in glue is not a readily available substance, and also carries the potential risk of a disease transmission as its derivation is dependent on two clotting factors which are derived from human blood.

It is due to the disadvantages of both the procedures that the new surgical method of 'Auto blood Conjunctival Graft Fixation' Surgery was invented as a successful treatment for the cure of Pterygium.
