Vehicles without valid insurance will not be allowed to undergo fitness test from April 1 in Telangana. The Transport Department in the state is making necessary changes in the online process to ensure that only the vehicles with valid insurance are allowed to undergo a fitness test.
According to a senior official of the Transport Department, all the RTA offices in the state will have the necessary details like vehicle’s class, insurance premium and other details submitted to the insurer. The official also added that the owner of the vehicle would have to physically present the documents to the RTA office for verification.
The transactions at the RTA offices usually include fitness certificates, vehicle registration, transferring ownership, issuing of NOCs etc. With the new system in place, all these transactions would be possible only if the vehicle is insured. The transaction will be processed only when the details given by the driver and the insurer are matched.
As per the Section 194 (2) (b) of the Motor Vehicle Act, a vehicle owner who doesn’t have an insurance certificate can be penalized with ₹ 1,000. Considering the hefty fine, it is in the best interest of the driver to buy third party insurance, bearing an affordable premium based on the vehicle’s model and class.
According to B. Venkateshwarlu, Joint Transport Commissioner, the data is being incorporated into RTA systems and most of the work is complete. A digital record of the vehicles is being maintained, which will also be shared with the police officials. This initiative is a great move to curb corruption in the road transport department.
