Driving Licence Renewal: How to Renew DL Online & Offline

A driving license holds a lot of significance in India. It is not only the legal document that certifies that an individual is eligible for driving, but it also is a valid identity proof across India. The driving license is issued and administered by the Regional Transport Authority/Office of various states or Union Territories across the country. Though the respective state authorities publish them, they have a fairly standard procedure overall.

Validity of A Driving License

A license obtained under a particular RTO is valid throughout India. The driving license is valid up to 20 years from the date of issuance or until the license holder attains 50 years of age, whichever condition is met first. The scenario is different in the case of commercial license as it is valid only for three years.

Renewal Process of Driving License

The renewal of a license is an important function. The first step is to fill and submit Form 9 at the respective RTO. Furthermore, additional documents like medical certificate, valid proof of age and residential proof are also mandatory. The driving license renewal fees vary from state to state and hence below are some of the major states with their respective driving license’ renewal fees.

Driving License in Maharashtra

The state of Maharashtra saw a total of 3,54,480 car sales in the year 2018-19. The state has a lot of vehicles and therefore, the driving license renewal fee is set at INR 416. An additional amount of INR 1 is levied if the application for the renewal of license is applied after the extension period.

Driving License in Uttar Pradesh

Uttar Pradesh, more commonly known as UP, has a more affordable fee, as it has a lot of vehicles and drivers, followed by Maharashtra. The driving license renewal fee is of an amount INR 200.

Driving License in Tamil Nadu, Haryana, Gujarat

The fee for renewal of license in Tamil Nadu is at a price of INR 200. If the renewal request is applied after the grace period of 30 days, an extra INR 100 is charged, therefore the total comes to INR 300.

Driving License in Karnataka

Karnataka has a good number of drivers and the driving license renewal fee in the state is of INR 250. If the application for the renewal of license is filed 30 days after the validity ends, INR 50 is charged additionally, and an INR 100 is charged if the application is filed a year after the expiry.

Driving License in Delhi

The capital of India is also the Union Territory with the highest number of drivers and vehicles. The RTO has set a driving license renewal fees of INR 200 but a hefty amount of INR 1000 per year if the renewal is delayed by over a year.

Driving License in Rajasthan

The desert state of India has charged a fee for the renewal of license at INR 300, and an amount of INR 1000 for each year is charged, if there is a delay in the renewal of license.

Driving License in Madhya Pradesh, Bihar

The state’s transport authority has put up an amount of INR 250 as the driving license fees for applications received under 30 days from expiry. Though it must be noted that, there is no official information regarding the late renewal of license charges on the Madhya Pradesh RTO website.

Driving License in Telangana

The youngest state of India has a driving license renewal fee of INR 200. Past the grace period, it is INR 300, and it increases to INR 1000 if the grace period crosses a year mark.
