These figures, although quite scary, speak for itself. It is quite clear that the increasing occurrence of road accidents in Delhi is really alarming. The deaths and injuries caused as a result of traffic violations due to over speeding in Delhi is also on the higher end.

Under the Motor Vehicle Act, the injured and the heir of an individual, dead by road accident, can claim compensation from the owner of the vehicle. Therefore, driving without insurance is a risky proposition.

Other than that, driving without insurance in India is an offence under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. If caught by the authorities, you will be levied with a hefty fine.

Earlier Over Speed Fine, Delhi

Under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, the over speed fine in Delhi was a mere Rs 400. The fine amount was not sufficient to act as a deterrent for vehicle owners from over speeding in Delhi traffic. The violators caught by the Delhi Police were more than happy to pay the fine, thus, escaping without having to face any further consequences.

New Traffic Rules for Delhi i

From 1st September 2019 onwards, new traffic rules have been implemented in Delhi. For all traffic violations, the Delhi Traffic Police are imposing a higher rate of fines. If anyone involved in traffic violations is caught by the Delhi Police, he or she should be prepared for a penalty or a challan.

The current rates of over speeding challan in Delhi are given as below:

  • Rs. 1000 for the light motor vehicles
  • Rs. 2000 for medium passenger vehicles

Payment Of Over Speed Challan in Delhi

The over speed challan in Delhi are collected immediately by the police from the offender. However, if the offender is unable to pay the over speed challan in Delhi then the same can be paid in court.

Use of E-Challans by Delhi Police

The Delhi Police have installed a network of cameras at crucial junctures throughout the city with the objective of acquiring video evidence on traffic violators especially with an over-speeding vehicle. Once caught in the camera, the owner of the vehicle will receive an e-challan imposing the over-speeding challan in Delhi.

Issuance of an E-Challan

The over speeding offender may receive the e-challan as an SMS on their registered mobile number. Or else, he or she may receive a hard copy of the notice by post at their registered address.

Payment of an E-Challan

The offender is allowed 60 days from the date of issue of such notice to make the payment of the over speed fine in Delhi. If he or she fails to do the same within the stipulated time, then the Delhi Police may refer the matter to the court for adjudication.

Once it is referred to the court, the driving license of the offender may be suspended for 3 months. He or she may face higher fines or even imprisonment for up to 3 months.

Therefore, it is always better to pay the challan within the prescribed time period to avoid further legal hassles.

Check Traffic Violations Offences Online

Follow the instructions step by step of the Delhi Police website www.delhipolice.nic.in where the offender can search for his or her committed offences and the challan amount to be paid. In the same website, the offender can make the payment of the challan online by choosing the “PAY NOW” option.

Although the issue of over-speeding challan in Delhi has become easy with the help of technology but, the main concern remains that of over speeding. There is hope that, with an increase in over speed fine in Delhi it will genuinely act as a deterrent and raise the awareness bar of the drivers.
