The Regional Transport Office (RTO) is a governmental body that oversees all road transport-related operations. You will encounter an RTO in each state and district in India. The RTOs in India must function according to the rules and regulations outlined in the Motor Vehicles Act 1988.

The primary function of an RTO is to keep a record of all the vehicles operating under its area of jurisdiction. The RTO issues driver's licenses, collects road taxes, monitors pollution checks, ensures adherence to road transportation laws, etc.

After getting your car registered and fulfilling the required formalities, remember to buy car insurance policy, as it is mandatory in India for all operational vehicles.
