Stay Safe on the Foggy Ways

It's the season when the days and nights get foggier, making driving a difficult task. Here's how you can stay extra-cautious.

You might be a seasoned driver, but when the visibility on the road reduces, you are at high risk. While driving in foggy conditions, make sure to follow certain safety rules.

Check the Weather Reports

Since fog accumulates more during early mornings and evenings, check the weather reports for fog warnings and don't drive unless necessary. This is important to keep in mind if you are driving near low-lying areas, such as lakes and rivers that tend to have heavier fog.

Keep Things Clean

Keep your headlights, windscreen, and windows clean to maximise your visibility. Not only does it prevent unwanted accidents, but also puts less strain on your eyes while driving.

Maintain Distance

While you have to maintain a minimum safety distance between vehicles in normal conditions, increase that distance while driving in fog. This will reduce accidents that are frequent during foggy weather.

Turn on the Lights

Use low beam lights while driving in fog for better visibility. Many drivers make the mistake of switching on their high beam lights, which reflect the water droplets in the fog, thereby impairing visibility. Use high beam lights only when you are sure that the fog has thinned. Turn on the tail-lights and blinkers so that other drivers can spot your car.

Drive Slow

Fog creates an illusion of driving slow; hence, drivers usually tend to speed up in such weather. Along with keeping eyes on the road, glance at the speedometer to regulate your speed.

Minimise Distractions

It's always better to reduce the distractions around you. Turn the radio volume down, do not answer calls or look at your phone screen. If you are unsure of the directions, ask your co-passenger to help you navigate. It is also advisable to roll down the windows so you can hear the traffic around you.

Stop Driving

If there's low visibility, the best advice is to pull over at a safe spot (and not in the middle of the road). Remember to turn off all the lights, except parking lights, so other drivers don't think you're driving. Resume driving only once the fog lightens/clears and you are confident enough to drive in such conditions.
