Health insurance

Health insurance is like your best friend. It’s the calm voice that reminds you of your health coverage when your late-night symptom searches make you restless. And when things actually go wrong, it helps you cover your medical expenses so that you get the care you deserve. A health insurance policy, also commonly known as medical insurance, covers a wide range of medical expenses like in-patient treatment, pre-and post-hospitalisation, surgeries, etc. That’s not all. You can also personalise it to get coverage for outpatient (OPD) treatment, critical illnesses, pregnancy, etc.

What is health insurance?

Health insurance or medical insurance protects you against rising medical costs. It is a legal contract wherein an insurer agrees to cover a range of medical expenses, including hospitalisations, daycare procedures and surgeries, for a certain amount (premium). And the best thing of this contract is the tenure– you get options ranging from one year to five years.

The best health insurance policies don’t just help you deal with rising healthcare costs, they provide coverage that goes beyond hospitalisation. For example, some policies also cover OPD treatments, preventive check-ups, ambulance charges, maternity expenses and more as per the policy's terms and conditions.

At ICICI Lombard, our health insurance policies start at just ₹11/dayA and come with benefits so that you can focus on what truly matters: staying healthy. You can also opt for add-ons such as 2-hour hospitalisation, Jumpstart, OPD+ rider, etc to customise your coverage and help you feel prepared for any health emergency.

  • Choose the best health insurance policy based on your healthcare and lifestyle needs – compare different policies, benefits, waiting periods and terms and conditions.

  • Health insurance premium depends on factors like age, location, medical history, type of coverage selected, add-on opted and discounts applied.

  • You can avail cashless hospitalisation at ICICI Lombard's network hospitals.

How does health insurance work?

Health insurance is your safety net during medical emergencies. You just need to pay a premium to keep your policy active. In exchange, the insurance company promises to cover your medical expenses as per the policy’s terms and conditions. Just note that medical insurance has certain waiting periods and coverage limits – it is advisable to understand them thoroughly to make the most of your policy.

Let’s understand how it works with an example:

1

You want a health insurance policy with a high sum insured to secure yourself.

2

You choose a ₹1 crore health insurance and pay the required premium for it.

3

Later, you fall sick and need hospitalisation.

4

You visit a network hospital and opt for cashless treatment.

5

The total hospital bill comes to ₹15 lakhs.

6

Your insurer directly settles the admissible bill with hospital and you pay only for what’s not covered by your policy.

7

You still have an unused sum insured of ₹85 lakhs left.

Types of health insurance policies

While there are multiple types of health insurance policies, each type caters to a particular need or purpose. Knowing the difference between them can help you choose the right health insurance!

Importance of buying health insurance

Medical inflation

Healthcare costs are increasing every year. Medical tests, hospital stays and treatments cost much more than they did earlier. Health insurance helps protect your savings from rising medical expenses.

Lifestyle-related diseases

Busy schedules, stress, and food habits are leading to more cases of diabetes, blood pressure and heart problems. These conditions often need regular treatment and monitoring, which health insurance helps manage.

Environmental factors

Poor air quality and rising pollution levels are causing breathing issues, allergies, and heart-related complications. Medical insurance ensures you can seek medical care without delaying treatment due to cost concerns.

Critical illnesses

Conditions like cancer and heart disease are no longer rare or age-specific. Treatment often starts immediately and continues for months. Health insurance helps you focus on care, not expenses.

Medical emergencies

Accidents, sudden illnesses and unexpected hospital visits can happen anytime. Health insurance helps you stay financially prepared when life takes an unexpected turn.

You can choose from add-ons like Jumpstart, OPD+ Rider, Maternity Cover, Critical Illness cover, etc. Remember, add-ons are subject to payment of additional premium
Sum Insured The maximum sum insured in a mediclaim policy is generally ₹ 5 lakh. You get the flexibility to opt for a higher sum insured (up to ₹ 1 crore). You can also buy a super top-up health insurance policy to expand your coverage.

Frequently asked questions on health insurance

  • General

What do you mean by a pre-existing disease?

Any condition, ailment or injury or related condition(s), for which you have had signs or symptoms, and/or were diagnosed, and/or received medical advice/treatment, within 36 months prior to the first policy with the insurance company is called a pre-existing disease.

What do you mean by waiting period?

Waiting period is the time you need to wait after buying your policy before certain claims are allowed.

What does annual sum insured mean?

Annual (basic) sum insured is the maximum amount that an insurance company will pay you in the event of a claim in a policy year.

If I increase my sum insured at the time of renewal, does a waiting period apply?

Yes, a waiting period will apply only to the added sum insured.

My employer provides me with a health insurance. Do I still need one?

Numerous employers offer group or individual health plans. However, these are not customised as per your needs and may have certain restrictions and limitations. Also, the coverage is dependent on the continuation of the job. Once you quit, you cannot avail the health plan benefits. Therefore, it is important to insure yourself with a comprehensive cover that lets you customise as per your needs. For example, for a family of 4 members, a sum insured of ₹2 lakh-₹3 lakh provided by your employer may be inadequate.

From what age can I include my children in the plan?

You can include your children aged between 90 days to 20 years in your policy. Newborns can be included after 90 days of birth. However, your daughter or son cannot be shown as a ‘dependent’ if they file a joint tax return.

Which health insurance policy is ideal?

It depends on your needs. For example, you can opt for a family floater health insurance if you want to cover multiple family members under a single policy. However, you can also opt for an individual health insurance policy for wider coverage.

What is the advantage of buying health insurance?

Health insurance protects you from unexpected medical expenses and offers cashless treatment at network hospitals. Apart from this, you can also get tax benefits on your health insurance policy under the old tax regime.

Can a person have more than one health insurance policy?

Yes, you can buy multiple health insurance policies to cover your medical costs. If one insurer rejects your claim, there is still a chance that others may accept as per its terms and conditions.

What is the right age to buy a health insurance policy?

It is recommended that you obtain a health insurance policy as soon as possible. Purchasing insurance at a young age allows you to earn an additional sum insured for every claim-free year under your policy. And as you get older, you will be able to accumulate higher and better coverage.

What to do if I am admitted to a non-network hospital?

When you get treatment at a non-network hospital, you need to pay for the medical costs out of your pocket first and later raise the bills with your insurer for reimbursement. You can also check with your insurer to avail cashless treatment through the ‘Cashless Everywhere” Initiative.

How does the GST waiver affect my health insurance premium?

With the 18% GST waiver, you now pay only the premium amount for your health insurance and no additional taxes. All this without compromising on coverage!

Will my existing health insurance policy also receive the GST benefit?

Yes, all existing health policies that are due for renewal will be GST-free.

How much GST do I have to pay on health insurance?

Effective 22nd September 2025, GST on health insurance has been reduced to 0%. This means your health insurance is GST-free.
