    The Bharat Stage (BS) Emission Standards are regulations designed to control air pollutants released from vehicles. All vehicles sold, registered, and driven in the country must comply with these standards, which were introduced by the Central Pollution Control Board, Government of India.

    BSIV and BSVI represent two iterations of these emission norms aimed at pollution control. In addition to adhering to BS norms to limit emission levels, it is also important to invest in good two wheeler insurance for your vehicle and conduct regular pollution checks.

    Difference Between BS4 and BS6 Engine

    The replacement of the BSIV with BSVI norms has led to significant changes in the type of engines used in vehicles. The differences are as follows:

    Year of Introduction:

    The Bharat Stage IV or BS4 norms were introduced in 2017.

    The Bharat Stage VI or BS5 norms were introduced in 2020.

    Type of Fuel:

    BSIV engines run on fuel that has 50 parts per million (ppm) of sulfur, which leads to more pollution. In contrast, BSVI engines use fuel with only 10 ppm of sulfur. This means BSVI fuel has five times less sulfur, making it much less harmful to the environment.

    Level of Emissions:

    BSIV engines emitted higher levels of toxic pollutants such as NOx, CO, PM, and HC compared to the newer standards. BSVI engines adhere to stricter emission norms. For petrol vehicles, the NOx emissions limit has been reduced from 80 mg/km to 60 mg/km, and for diesel vehicles, it has been reduced from 250 mg/km to 80 mg/km.
