  • The Indian Surrogacy Market Increases as Demand Rises

    by iciclombard 01 | Oct 25, 2023

The demand of Indian surrogates in the Surrogacy market is on an incline as the Indian surrogacy industry sees a steady rise in number of British nationals preferring Indian women to bear their child.

In a recent estimation there are at present nearly 1,000 unregulated fertility clinics in India, out which quite a few are helping Britons in becoming parents.

Owing to the fact that commercial surrogacy is illegal in the United Kingdom, the business seems to be quite lucrative as couples and single parents pay at an average 25,000 pounds a visit to have a child in India.

It’s a general consensus among experts that for the Indian surrogacy market Britain is the largest single source of people, who opt for becoming parents through surrogacy, and an estimated 2,000 births last year, through surrogacy in the country validates the fact.

The need for regulations for the industry which Indian officials believe to be worth almost 1.5 billion pounds a year, seems necessary, as Indian women are paid upto 6,000 pounds to donate their eggs and carry the babies, which is banned in the United Kingdom, hence the inflow of British visitors has increased manifold over the years.

    by Almog Ramrajkar | Oct 25, 2023

Some health insurance policies also have a flexible sum insured that allow you to set the limit on the total sum insured and enjoy a variety of policy benefits during a medical emergency.

Policy for individual health insurance may offer coverage against medical conditions arising due to different types of accidents. Some policies offer features that offer numerous financial and medical benefits to individuals suffering from a critical illness. Such type of a policy is sure to help the family of the ailing individual to a great extent as the monetary assistance will prevent loss of finances during treatment and recovery.

When choosing to insure the health of your entire family, you may select a policy plan that offers a large sum insured. Also, the policy must offer flexibility for the usage of the sum insured i.e. in case of a medical emergency this sum insured can be either used completely by one family member or can be shared equally by family members mentioned in the policy plan. • The IRDAI Wants Insurers to Speed up Claims Process

    by Almog Ramrajkar | Oct 25, 2023

The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) had on 29th September 2011 issued an order on how to deal with delayed intimation of claims and delayed submission of documents by claimants.

They had issued a circular informing insurance companies that they had been receiving many complaints of claims being rejected because of a delay in intimation and submission of documents. They asked insurers to not deny claims on mere technical grounds, particularly if the delay was due to an unavoidable circumstance.

The circular stated that, “The current contractual obligation imposing the condition that claims shall be intimated to the insurer with prescribed document within a specified time period is necessary for insurers for effecting various post claim activities like investigation, loss assessment, provisioning and claim settlement. However, this condition should not prevent settlement of various claims, particularly when the delay in intimation or submission of documents is due to unavoidable circumstances.”

The IRDAI further asked insurers to reject insurance claims only on the basis of sound logic or for extremely valid reasons. Insurers are to find a sound mechanism to deal with claims that are submitted after the specified time period.

“The insurers should treat such claims on ‘merit’ and ‘good spirit’ of the clause, with ‘utmost care’ and ‘caution’, without compromising on bad claims.” IRDAI said.

“Rejection of claims merely on technical grounds and mechanical fashion will result in policy holders losing confidence in the insurance industry, giving rise to excessive litigation.” it added.

  • Only 30% Indians Have a Mediclaim Policy - NATHEALTH

    by Almog Ramrajkar | Oct 25, 2023

A report published this month by NATHEALTH, has underlined the lack of awareness and penetration of Health insurance policies in the country. NATHEALTH, a unique health forum created by leading insurers and diagnostic service providers, strives to enhance the accessibility and quality of healthcare facilities in India.

The white paper named 'Aarogya Bharat 2015' has stated that 70% of Indians have not opted for a health insurance cover till date. It also stated that India falls short of the global healthcare benchmark by approximately by two million beds!

Karan Singh, head of Bain's Healthcare Practice in Asia-Pacific, co-author of the above report, said, "Increased investment in healthcare would create a 'win-win' scenario by increasing the number of years that Indians can be productive and healthy, thereby fueling a continuous cycle of economic growth. Fewer sick days translates to increased productivity, higher employment and an estimated 15 million to 20 million additional jobs in the country by 2025."

NATHEALTH, in its report, has recommended more public spending for healthcare (up to 2.5% to 3% of India's GDP). It has also suggested that more funds be earmarked by the Government for providing a healthier future to the masses. The Government health policy for the next ten years needs to encompass issues like prevention of diseases, ample availability of mass screenings and easy accessibility of primary healthcare, among others.

  • WHO India Helps Advices on Adding Life to Years

    by iciclombard 01 | Oct 23, 2023

In India, just as everywhere across the globe, people are enjoying longevity. It is also no secret that Indian population is ageing and will continue to age on a consistent basis of the newt decades. It is also estimated that the population aged up 60 years and above will eventually grow from 77 million. This was about 7.4 percent of the total population in the 2001 and up to 300 million (17 percent) by 2050!

The ageing of the populace has key implications for the health system of India and humanity as a whole. This requires being further researched, understood as well as addressed by appropriate and apposite strategies and movements. According to Dr. Nata Menabde, the WHO Representative to India, the challenge for India, as for all nations across the globe, is not only to add a few more years to life but most significantly to add life to years. The prime motive here is to guarantee that the elderly can easily live life in full terms. He also added that it is all about leading an inspiring as well as creative lives. In order to make this possible, being in good health is extremely essential.

With the steady upsurge in life expectation and the aging population, the problem of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), such as like stroke, heart disease, cancers, mental health problems, diabetes and vision and hearing damage will persist. This will increase demands for health services. Dr. Samlee Plianbangchang, WHO Regional Director for South-East Asia said that with trend towards nuclear family, it has become extremely difficult to take good care of elderly population. He also mentioned that long term care of old and weak will require extra inputs both from the families and governments.

Dr. Nata Menabde also added that the inauguration of the National Programme for Health Care of the Elderly (NPHCE) by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare is a significant step in this direction.

How to Buy the Best Health Insurance Policy?

A survey of 1400 people in the age group of 25-35 by ICICI Lombard in 2015 revealed that 75% of them had a health insurance plan. Interestingly, an astonishing 46% of those buyers cited tax deduction on premium as the prominent reason to buy health insurance.

While one of the benefits of health insurance is tax exemption, the apparent lack of awareness for the major benefits is reflected in the low insurance penetration in the country. Which means, a majority of Indians are burdened with the out of pocket medical expenses.

Health insurance is a crucial financial tool to avoid unexpected financial crises. However, you must know the following basics before you consider buying a policy:

    • Sum Insured and Policy Period: The sum insured in a health insurance policy may be on an individual basis, or on a floater basis. The policy is usually available in one, two or three year options. Always opt for a policy that offers a higher sum insured with higher discounts for multi-year option and tax benefits.

    Remember:

Most policies do not cover donor expenses during an organ transplant surgery. Look into the various expenses covered under hospitalisation, in-patient treatment, and other treatments for which you can claim, before buying a policy.

    • In Patient Treatment: Several policies offer medical expenses for hospitalisation for a minimum period of 24 consecutive hours. However, most of them do not cover the expenses for AYUSH treatment regardless of the treatment carried out in a government or recognised institute.
    • Pre-existing Diseases: Almost every insurer has a waiting period of 3-5 years for a pre-existing disease. Usually top-ups or add-ons reduce the waiting period based on the number of years spent in the base policy.
    • Cashless Hospitalisation: Insurance companies have tie-ups with leading hospitals in all major cities across the country. They arrange for direct payment with these network hospitals through third party associations to help you avoid out of pocket expenses. It is always better to go with an insurer with a broader network of hospitals, with one close to your residence.
