    Cholesterol is a type of body fat classified as sterols. In addition to sterols, the body also contains triglycerides and phospholipids. The liver produces the cholesterol essential for our day-to-day body functions, around 800-1500 mg daily. It is harmful for the body only if the level of bad cholesterol exceeds the permissible limit. Read on to debunk the myths around this body fat and arm yourself with knowledge to stay healthy.


    Friend and Foe: Good and Bad Cholesterol

    High-density lipoprotein (HDL) is a cholesterol carrier made of proteins and fats. Cholesterol does not dissolve in the blood stream. Therefore, it requires carriers such as protein and fat to transport it to different parts of the body. Considered the good cholesterol, HDL helps to flush the unhealthy cholesterol from our body. A 55 mg/dl level of HDL signifies that there has been more cholesterol outflow than sedimentation.

    On the other hand, bad cholesterol or low-density lipoprotein (LDL) has fats as its major component with little protein. LDL is responsible for depositing cholesterol in the arteries. High LDL levels can cause blockage in the arteries, preventing blood flow. An optimum LDL should be within 100 mg/dl.

    Besides the numbers mentioned above, a good test of whether your cholesterol levels are healthy is to check for the ratio of total cholesterol to HDL. As long as it is maintained around 3, you have no reason to worry. Total cholesterol maintained within 200 mg/dl is ideal. Similarly, HDL level should be not more than 40 mg/dl in case of men and less than 50 mg/dl for women. LDL value greater than 130 mg/dl is not desirable.

    Diet and Lifestyle

    Cholesterol is primarily found in processed food. Eatables made from refined sugar, flour, trans-fat foods, etc. tend to be the main culprits of high triglycerides and the ill effects of bad cholesterol. Excessive alcohol consumption is also a contributing factor. To maintain healthy cholesterol levels, avoid over indulging in such foods.

    A diet rich in fiber and grains is excellent for removing the bad cholesterol from the body. Apples, oats, almonds, garlic, spinach, beans also help reduce cholesterol levels since these contain soluble fiber. Contrary to popular belief, consumption of nuts does not increase cholesterol.     Pompe

    A rare neuromuscular disorder, the disease is inherited by a defective gene from parents. A progressive ailment which gets worse with time, the disease causes loss of muscle tissue and muscle weakness. It also results in difficulty in breathing and frequent respiratory infections such as pneumonia and bronchitis.

    Enzyme replacement therapy is one of the possible treatments for Pompe, while gene and stem cell therapies are under development. The cost of treating the ailment is pretty high and can easily upwards of Rs. 35 lakhs. Also, there’s a need for supportive care like physiotherapy along with monthly medicines, which can further augment costs.

    Haemophilia

    This is another rare disease, which prevents the normal clotting of blood because of insufficient blood clotting proteins. People suffering from this disorder bleed for a longer time, post an injury than others would.

    The symptoms include unusual bleeding post-vaccination, nosebleeds without any reason, deep bruises, and pain and swelling in joints. The primary treatment of this rare disease includes replacement of special clotting factor, to be administered regularly to prevent excessive bleeding.

    Clot-preserving medications which prevent the clot from breaking down can also be administered. The cost of replacement therapy can run upwards of Rs. 2 lakhs as per the level of severity of the disease.

    Sickle Cell Anaemia

    It’s an inherited red blood disorder, where there aren’t enough healthy red blood cells (RBCs) that carry oxygen. In this, the RBCs are like sickles and get stuck in the blood vessels, thus blocking blood flow and oxygen throughout the body.

    There’s no specific cure for sickle cell anaemia, and most treatments are geared to relieve pain and prevent complications associated with the ailment. In some cases, doctors may administer blood transfusion and bone marrow transplant. Bone marrow transplant is extremely expensive and can cost upwards of Rs. 16 lakhs.

    Cystic Fibrosis

    An inherited disorder, cystic fibrosis causes severe damage to lungs, digestive system along with other organs. The disease impacts the cells which produce digestive juices, sweat and mucus. The symptoms of the disease include repeated lung infection, persistent cough producing thick mucus and inflamed nasal passages, among others. Chronic constipation is also one of the signs of the disease.

    Treatment includes controlling infections occurring in lungs, preventing intestinal blockage and having adequate nutrition. Apart from these, airways clearance techniques to keep sinuses and airways clean also go a long way in providing relief to patients suffering from the ailment.

    Gaucher Disease

    This ailment is caused due to the build-up of certain fatty substances in organs such as liver and spleen. This causes them to bulge and affect their performance. The fatty substance can also build up in bone tissue and weakening it in the process. If the bone marrow is affected, then it can interfere in the blood’s ability to clot.

    Abdominal complaints, blood disorders and skeletal abnormalities are some of the symptoms of this disease. Enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) and substrate reduction therapy (SRT) are two treatment options available for Gaucher disease. ERT therapy can cost upwards of Rs. 40 lakhs a year.

    Haemangioma

    Haemangioma is a bright red birthmark which shows up at birth or during the first and second week of life. Appearing as a rubbery bump, it is made up of extra blood vessels in the skin. Though it can occur anywhere in the body, most commonly it appears on scalp, chest, face or back.

    While a baby’s haemangioma fades with time, treatment is required if it interferes in breathing, seeing or other functions. Treatment includes laser therapy or medications.

    Kidney stones are solid deposits which originate in the kidney. The initial microscopic deposits grow into large stones when certain chemicals become concentrated enough in the urine to form crystals. They result in excruciating pain, coming in waves until the tiny stone passes through the urinary plumbing and out of the body. In some cases, kidney stones become lodged in the ureter and block the flow of urine.

    Most stones are formed when calcium combines with either of two substances: oxalate or phosphorous. Stones can also form from uric acid, which forms as the body metabolises protein. Also, it is not a one-time problem: in about half of people suffering with kidney stones, another appears within seven years if there are no preventive measures taken.

    Studies show that kidney stones appear to be more common in people with Asian and Caucasian backgrounds. Preventing kidney stones means preventing the conditions which support and instigate their formation.

    Lifestyle changes

    The deposits in the kidney form when urine contains more crystal-forming substances than the fluid in the urine can dilute. It may lack substances that prevent crystals from sticking together, creating an ideal environment for stone formation.

    • Drink Your Way

    Living in a hot and dry climate necessitates drinking more water and produces more urine, about 2.5 litres a day. Dehydration often causes low urine volume and less fluid to grab calcium and other compounds in the urinary system. Unless the urine is light and clear, keep drinking enough water.

    • Avoid Sugar

    Diets high in sugar can increase urinary calcium excretion and increase the risk of kidney stone formation.     • Add Rice Bran to Your Diet

    It has been observed that high-fibre diets reduce the risk of developing kidney stones. In fact, a study found that when patients took 10 grams of rice bran twice daily, their recurrence rate for kidney stones was reduced by almost 80 percent.

    • Avoid High Sodium Intake

    Too much of sodium intake can create mineral imbalances in the body. If you are on a moderate-high carbohydrate diet, the body will naturally retain sodium and can cause more problems with mineral balance. Low-carbohydrate, high-fat diets excrete sodium and therefore need more good salts.

    Stay away from processed salts and processed sodium-rich foods, and consume natural foods. Stick to a low-moderate carbohydrate, high-good fat diet and consume unprocessed sea salts and pink salts.

    • Create A Calcium-rich Diet

    Diets low in calcium can increase kidney stone formation in some people. A daily glass of orange juice can help prevent the recurrence of kidney stones better than other citrus fruit juices such as lemonade.

  • 56% of the Indian Population Still Not Covered

    A vast section of the Indian population continues to be outside the purview of health insurance , found a report titled ‘Indian Life and Health Insurance Sectors’ from consulting firm Milliman.

    The report found only 44% of the total population in the country to have a health insurance policy as of 2017. It essentially means 56% of the country’s 1.3 billion people don’t have a health cover.

    The report also found the private sector to be spending a significant chunk of the healthcare expenditure in India at 70%, with the government spending only 30%. Contrary to this, the federal and state government in the US contribute as much as 45%.

    Though health insurance penetration has gone up over the last few years, the market is still significantly untapped. While 76% of the population didn’t have any health cover in 2013-14, the number dropped to 56% during 2016-17. The Milliman report found the number of uncovered people by subtracting the covered people from the population estimate as given in the National Health Profile.

    The report also found standalone health insurers gaining a significant presence in the retail segment between 2013-17. Experts attribute this rise to the ability of standalone health insurers to innovate their best health insurance products and aligning them with the needs of customers.

    The report also says that the ambitious Aayushman Bharat Scheme launched by the Government this year, that plans to cover over 10 crore poor and vulnerable families offering coverage up to ₹5 lakh per family, will upgrade over 1.5 lakh sub-centres to wellness centres by 2022. It’s anticipated that those not eligible for coverage under Aayushman Bharat will opt for private insurance.
