  • What is Cholesterol

    by mohit bohra | Oct 31, 2023

Popular myths facts about this body fat

Cholesterol is a type of body fat classified as sterols. In addition to sterols, the body also contains triglycerides and phospholipids. The liver produces the cholesterol essential for our day-to-day body functions, around 800-1500 mg daily. It is harmful for the body only if the level of bad cholesterol exceeds the permissible limit. Read on to debunk the myths around this body fat and arm yourself with knowledge to stay healthy.

Friend and Foe: Good and Bad Cholesterol

High-density lipoprotein (HDL) is a cholesterol carrier made of proteins and fats. Cholesterol does not dissolve in the blood stream. Therefore, it requires carriers such as protein and fat to transport it to different parts of the body. Considered the good cholesterol, HDL helps to flush the unhealthy cholesterol from our body. A 55 mg/dl level of HDL signifies that there has been more cholesterol outflow than sedimentation.

On the other hand, bad cholesterol or low-density lipoprotein (LDL) has fats as its major component with little protein. LDL is responsible for depositing cholesterol in the arteries. High LDL levels can cause blockage in the arteries, preventing blood flow. An optimum LDL should be within 100 mg/dl.

Besides the numbers mentioned above, a good test of whether your cholesterol levels are healthy is to check for the ratio of total cholesterol to HDL. As long as it is maintained around 3, you have no reason to worry. Total cholesterol maintained within 200 mg/dl is ideal. Similarly, HDL level should be not more than 40 mg/dl in case of men and less than 50 mg/dl for women. LDL value greater than 130 mg/dl is not desirable.

    Diet and Lifestyle

Cholesterol is primarily found in processed food. Eatables made from refined sugar, flour, trans-fat foods, etc. tend to be the main culprits of high triglycerides and the ill effects of bad cholesterol. Excessive alcohol consumption is also a contributing factor. To maintain healthy cholesterol levels, avoid over indulging in such foods.

A diet rich in fiber and grains is excellent for removing the bad cholesterol from the body. Apples, oats, almonds, garlic, spinach, beans also help reduce cholesterol levels since these contain soluble fiber. Contrary to popular belief, consumption of nuts does not increase cholesterol. In fact, daily intake of almonds can help to improve blood cholesterol.

A healthy and wholesome diet must be complemented with regular exercise to keep these numbers in check. This helps keep cholesterol-related issues at bay and makes room for occasional indulgence in foods that tickle the taste buds but don't score high on the health index. Incorporate lifestyle changes and follow a disciplined routine to avoid health complications. While you take these precautions, also opt for a health insurance to safeguard your finances in case of unforeseen health issues.

  • Why You Should Buy a Comprehensive Medical Insurance

    by mohit bohra | Oct 31, 2023

In the absence of a medical health insurance, you run the risk of depleting your savings or you may have to settle for below par health care facilities which may have far reaching effects on you or your loved ones’ health.

It is wise to choose a health insurance plan like the complete health insurance plan under which you can opt for individual or floater coverage for your family. With this plan, you can get access to the insurance provider’s network of quality health care providers for cashless claims. Thus your loved ones can enjoy the advantages of a larger sum insured while availing the best possible care at premium health care facilities.

Such comprehensive insurance policy may not include Sub-limits, refer to policy document for details. A sub-limit is any restriction on the sum insured for any treatment or medical services covered by the policy. This means that you and your family members can make claims for the full sum insured under your selected medical health insurance policy structure. The lifelong renewability feature is another enticing benefit offered by this policy and must be considered carefully when selecting your insurance policy.

Under this policy, there is no health insurance deductible, which means that you do not have to worry about making any payments for diseases or ailments covered under your policy. You can then concentrate on the well being and comfort of your loved one without the worrying even about a fraction of the hospital bill. co-payment is the fraction of the cost payable by the insured for medical services covered by the plan. Your complete health insurance policy may not have any co-payments which further adds to the overall benefit.

With a health insurance policy, you not only have the advantage of quality health care but can also enjoy considerable tax benefits. This is because under Section 80D of the Income Tax Act, investments made towards the payment of premium for health insurance are eligible for rebate from your taxable income up to a certain limit. Thus, you can savinge up to Rs. 15,000 per year on the premium paid for your insurance policy. Also, if you are paying the premium for your insured parents who are senior citizens, you can claim an additional amount of Rs. 20,000 per year.

Thus, your health insurance policy is not only full of medical benefits but also enhances net savings in the long run.

  • Tips to Manage Stress While Working

    by mohit bohra | Oct 31, 2023

Ever experience blurred vision, watery eyes or pain behind the neck? Often feel exhausted and sluggish at the end of the day, even without much physical exertion? These could be your body's way of telling you that you have been sitting for long hours at a stretch at your work desk.

Working without breaks can be counterproductive and might result in stress. Here are some simple ways in which you can de-stress yourself without getting away from your desk:

    1. Gaze out of your window

In school, we were told not to gaze out of the window while classes were going on. However, sometimes that is just what your mind needs for rejuvenation and regained focus.

If your thoughts happen to drift away, take a short break. Allow your thoughts to flow. The sub-conscious works in mysterious ways; you just might find the solution you were looking for, in the midst of your daydreaming.

    2. Doodle Away

Whenever you panic over an important assignment, or hyperventilate over an impossible deadline, take a pen and paper and let your right brain go crazy. Make some cartoons or just draw whatever comes to your mind.

Meanwhile, your left brain takes a break so you can start fresh with your work once again. Remember, you want to relax, not add to your stress. So don't worry about how your picture or sketch turns out, even random squiggles can help!

    3. Meditate

While it may seem boring, meditation has been proven quite effective to manage your mind. Simply close your eyes and take deep breaths.

If you are unable to concentrate with your eyes closed, then look at soothing images or listen to relaxing music. The sound of flowing water is known for its calming effect. Perform better in meetings or achieve deadlines with a clear head.

    4. Go to Your Happy Place

Your happy place is any environment where you feel safe and relaxed. It can be anything and have anything that you fancy.

It could be the house made of candy from 'Hansel and Gretel'. Or a room filled with books. To each his own, right?

    5. Flex Your Muscles

Staying in one position can make your body stiff. It is imperative that you do certain movements that will help you relax and prevent your muscles from sleeping.

Open your jaw as wide as you can. Roll your shoulders back twice, then forward twice, then back once more. Also, stretch your arms and legs frequently.

    6. Mind Your Posture

Most corporate jobs today require you to sit in front of a screen. Our bodies start to contract and emulate the stress we feel in our muscular system. This is most reflected on the back, neck and shoulders.

Make sure that your head is in alignment with your neck and that your back is straight. According to good ergonomics, your computer screen should be at least an arm's length away from you.

These six tips will go a long way to help you stay fit and be more productive and comfortable at work. However, don't let these activities come in the way of your work.

  • 5 Tips to Stick to Your Exercise Routine

    by mohit bohra | Oct 31, 2023

“Do the difficult things while they are easy, and do the great things while they are small. A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step.” This quote by Lao Tzu, a Chinese philosopher and writer, emphasises the need to initiate with a step, however small it may be. The same applies when you take a small step towards your fitness – whether you choose to climb the stairs, decide to walk those short distances, or eat healthy.

However, amidst hectic schedules and meeting deadlines, you may find it difficult to cope. According to an online study conducted by Bodybuilding.com, 73% of the people who had fitness goals as a part of their new year resolution, gave up before meeting their goals. The beginning of anything is always the toughest; the key is in not giving up.

Here are five useful tips that will help you stick to your exercise routines and healthy diet against all odds:

      • Do it for Yourself

Do not hit the gym because others think you should; do it for yourself. There is nothing as transient as external motivation. Self-motivation will keep you going for years on end. Ask yourself the following questions, ‘Why do I need to be fit?’, ‘What will my body achieve by staying healthy?’ ‘How do I stay fit?’

Remember the need for you to stay healthy and create custom routines that suit you, the rest will follow.

      • Set Reasonable Goals

Being healthy is not just about running or hitting the gym for hours, it is about taking baby steps. Know your limitations to avoid undue exertion that may wear you out or inflict muscle injury. Consult a qualified trainer if you decide to change your routine.

      • Mix and Balance

You will be nothing but disappointed and discouraged, if you believe that only working out would strengthen your immune system. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, published a study, which explicitly stated that, a combination of healthy eating and exercise is the preferred roadmap to a healthy heart. Striking a perfect balance between these two is a prerequisite for good health. What’s more, mixing various exercise forms such as cardio, aerobics, yoga with interesting food that keeps you energetic all day long will definitely keep it interesting for you.

      • Find a Friend

Your friends are your extended family. Sometimes, what you can't, your friend's pep talk can. Find a friend whose fitness goals coincide with yours. Break the monotony of your workout sessions by getting them along; make the burn session a fun session with them. Plan activities such as cycling, hiking or walking with your significant other or children over the weekends to spread the awareness in your family.

      • Leverage Technology

Technology is a boon when it comes to the fitness domain. There are various mobile applications that you can download to keep a track of your workout sessions. You can measure your Body Mass Index, compare the results with your goals, and then work towards filling the gap.

Staying healthy is physically and mentally rewarding. With ICICI Lombard, it is fiscally rewarding as well! • All You Need to Know About the Sugary Disease

    by Almog Ramrajkar | Oct 31, 2023

In the absence of insulin, the glucose is unavailable to the cells and it simply accumulates in the blood. Glucose is the primary source of energy for our body cells and if it is unavailable, it causes all sorts of complications. This bad karma is called diabetes.

Let's Look at the Different Types of Diabetes

    Type 1 Diabetes

Also known as insulin-dependent diabetes, or juvenile diabetes or early-onset diabetes, this type is seen in about 10% of diabetics. This is an autoimmune disorder in which the body's immune system destroys the beta cells of the pancreas, which are responsible for the production of insulin. The person's pancreas does not produce any insulin and the person has to rely on injected insulin for the rest of his/her life.

    Type 2 Diabetes

This is the most common form of diabetes and is seen in approximately 90% of diabetics worldwide. In this disorder, body cells do not respond to insulin and eventually, the production of insulin may also decline.

    Gestational Diabetes

    This only affects pregnant females.

    Why Does Anyone Get Diabetes?

It is difficult to pinpoint the causes of this complicated disorder. Heredity plays an important role in the development of diabetes as does race. It is found that people from the Middle East, Africa and South East Asia are at a greater risk of getting diabetes than others.

Besides these common symptoms, a few other symptoms (not specific to the disorder) are:

    1. Blurred eyesight
    2. Fatigue
    3. Headache
    4. Irritability
    5. Cuts And Wounds that take an unusually long time to heal
    6. Itchy Skin
    7. Sexual Dysfunction In Men

The primary problem associated with diabetes is the sudden rise in blood glucose levels, called hyperglycemia. This can manifest by symptoms that include shakiness, anxiety, palpitations, abdominal discomfort, etc.

    How Can You Cure Diabetes?

Diabetes cannot be cured by taking drugs, but it can be very well managed. In many cases, type 2 diabetes has been completely reversed through lifestyle modifications. Regular uptake of insulin in case of type 1 diabetes, a healthy eating and exercise plan, periodic checking of blood glucose levels, giving up of smoking and alcohol consumption are all part of a management strategy for diabetes.

Diabetes is spreading like a pandemic. Estimates suggest that as many as 382 million people in the world suffered from diabetes in 2013. Researchers and scientists foresee diabetes as the seventh leading cause of death by the year 2030.

But, all is not lost yet. While type 1 diabetes can not be prevented, type 2 can. All it needs is a change in our current lifestyle and a motivation for leading a healthier life.

  • Have You Heard About These Rare Diseases and Their Treatments?

    by icicilombard 002 | Oct 31, 2023

While they affect only a small percentage of the population, treatment of rare diseases can burn a big hole in your pocket

Rare diseases refer to ailments that affect a small section of the population. Note that most rare diseases are genetic; hence, people diagnosed with these have to live with them throughout their lives. Since these ailments don’t affect a large section of the population, awareness regarding them is quite low.

India’s National Policy for Treatment for Rare Diseases in 2017 estimated approximately 6,000 [1] to 8,000 rare diseases with 450 [2] of them recorded in India. In this article, we will tell you about some of the rare ailments and their treatment.

    Pompe

A rare neuromuscular disorder, the disease is inherited by a defective gene from parents. A progressive ailment which gets worse with time, the disease causes loss of muscle tissue and muscle weakness. It also results in difficulty in breathing and frequent respiratory infections such as pneumonia and bronchitis.

Enzyme replacement therapy is one of the possible treatments for Pompe, while gene and stem cell therapies are under development. The cost of treating the ailment is pretty high and can easily upwards of Rs. 35 lakhs. Also, there’s a need for supportive care like physiotherapy along with monthly medicines, which can further augment costs.

    Haemophilia

This is another rare disease, which prevents the normal clotting of blood because of insufficient blood clotting proteins. People suffering from this disorder bleed for a longer time, post an injury than others would.

The symptoms include unusual bleeding post-vaccination, nosebleeds without any reason, deep bruises, and pain and swelling in joints. The primary treatment of this rare disease includes replacement of special clotting factor, to be administered regularly to prevent excessive bleeding.

Clot-preserving medications which prevent the clot from breaking down can also be administered. The cost of replacement therapy can run upwards of Rs. 2 lakhs as per the level of severity of the disease.

    Sickle Cell Anaemia

It’s an inherited red blood disorder, where there aren’t enough healthy red blood cells (RBCs) that carry oxygen. In this, the RBCs are like sickles and get stuck in the blood vessels, thus blocking blood flow and oxygen throughout the body.

There’s no specific cure for sickle cell anaemia, and most treatments are geared to relieve pain and prevent complications associated with the ailment. In some cases, doctors may administer blood transfusion and bone marrow transplant. Bone marrow transplant is extremely expensive and can cost upwards of Rs. 16 lakhs.

    Cystic Fibrosis

An inherited disorder, cystic fibrosis causes severe damage to lungs, digestive system along with other organs. The disease impacts the cells which produce digestive juices, sweat and mucus. The symptoms of the disease include repeated lung infection, persistent cough producing thick mucus and inflamed nasal passages, among others. Chronic constipation is also one of the signs of the disease.

Treatment includes controlling infections occurring in lungs, preventing intestinal blockage and having adequate nutrition. Apart from these, airways clearance techniques to keep sinuses and airways clean also go a long way in providing relief to patients suffering from the ailment.

    Gaucher Disease

This ailment is caused due to the build-up of certain fatty substances in organs such as liver and spleen. This causes them to bulge and affect their performance. The fatty substance can also build up in bone tissue and weakening it in the process. If the bone marrow is affected, then it can interfere in the blood’s ability to clot.

Abdominal complaints, blood disorders and skeletal abnormalities are some of the symptoms of this disease. Enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) and substrate reduction therapy (SRT) are two treatment options available for Gaucher disease. ERT therapy can cost upwards of Rs. 40 lakhs a year.

    Haemangioma

Haemangioma is a bright red birthmark which shows up at birth or during the first and second week of life. Appearing as a rubbery bump, it is made up of extra blood vessels in the skin. Though it can occur anywhere in the body, most commonly it appears on scalp, chest, face or back.

While a baby’s haemangioma fades with time, treatment is required if it interferes in breathing, seeing or other functions. Treatment includes laser therapy or medications.

    In conclusion

While the severity and symptoms of rare diseases may vary, the cost of treatment is extremely high, which can significantly dry up your savings. In such a scenario, a health insurance plan can come to your rescue and prevent out-of-pocket expenditure.

In other words, a comprehensive health plan can fortify your finances from taking a dip during treatment of any of the above-mentioned rare diseases.

  • Lifestyle Changes to Keep Kidney Stones Away

    by icicilombard 002 | Oct 31, 2023

Ways to avoid deposits in the kidney and prevent excruciating pain

Kidney stones are solid deposits which originate in the kidney. The initial microscopic deposits grow into large stones when certain chemicals become concentrated enough in the urine to form crystals. They result in excruciating pain, coming in waves until the tiny stone passes through the urinary plumbing and out of the body. In some cases, kidney stones become lodged in the ureter and block the flow of urine.

Most stones are formed when calcium combines with either of two substances: oxalate or phosphorous. Stones can also form from uric acid, which forms as the body metabolises protein. Also, it is not a one-time problem: in about half of people suffering with kidney stones, another appears within seven years if there are no preventive measures taken.

Studies show that kidney stones appear to be more common in people with Asian and Caucasian backgrounds. Preventing kidney stones means preventing the conditions which support and instigate their formation.

    Lifestyle changes

The deposits in the kidney form when urine contains more crystal-forming substances than the fluid in the urine can dilute. It may lack substances that prevent crystals from sticking together, creating an ideal environment for stone formation.

    • Drink Your Way

Living in a hot and dry climate necessitates drinking more water and produces more urine, about 2.5 litres a day. Dehydration often causes low urine volume and less fluid to grab calcium and other compounds in the urinary system. Unless the urine is light and clear, keep drinking enough water.

    • Avoid Sugar

Diets high in sugar can increase urinary calcium excretion and increase the risk of kidney stone formation. Soft drinks and sweets are the biggest dietary causes as they often contain high levels of fructose and phosphoric acid. Natural sweeteners, like stevia, have the unique ability to regulate blood sugar levels.

    • Avoid Oxalate-rich Foods

If you tend to form calcium oxalate stones, it is recommended restricting foods rich in oxalates. These include rhubarb, beets, okra, spinach, Swiss chard, sweet potatoes, nuts, tea, chocolate, and soy products.

    • Add Rice Bran to Your Diet

It has been observed that high-fibre diets reduce the risk of developing kidney stones. In fact, a study found that when patients took 10 grams of rice bran twice daily, their recurrence rate for kidney stones was reduced by almost 80 percent.

    • Avoid High Sodium Intake

Too much of sodium intake can create mineral imbalances in the body. If you are on a moderate-high carbohydrate diet, the body will naturally retain sodium and can cause more problems with mineral balance. Low-carbohydrate, high-fat diets excrete sodium and therefore need more good salts.

Stay away from processed salts and processed sodium-rich foods, and consume natural foods. Stick to a low-moderate carbohydrate, high-good fat diet and consume unprocessed sea salts and pink salts.

    • Create A Calcium-rich Diet

Diets low in calcium can increase kidney stone formation in some people. A daily glass of orange juice can help prevent the recurrence of kidney stones better than other citrus fruit juices such as lemonade.

Medically managing recurrent kidney stones requires dietary and lifestyle changes as well as treatment such as the addition of potassium citrate, which lowers the rate of new stone formation in patients with kidney stones.

Treatment of kidney stones is a costly affair these days. You need to undergo several blood and urine tests followed by CT scans, specialist visits, lab analysis of kidney stone and antibiotics prescription. The entire process can be financially draining. A health insurance is a smart way to cover yourself against these expenses. With free health check-ups and cashless hospitalisation facilities, you can always rest assured in times of hardships.

  • 5 Things To Consider Before You Finalize Accident Insurance

    by Almog Ramrajkar | Oct 31, 2023

A checklist that assists you in making the right choice:

With an alarming number of accidents occurring each day, personal accident insurance is an increasing necessity. But, as the old saying goes, "Half knowledge is dangerous"! Buying a policy without studying the details is equivalent to having no insurance at all.

For instance, a Delhi-based policyholder was involved in an unfortunate car accident that cost him his index finger. Although the hospital certified him with 15% disability, the insurer refused to pay the claim because his policy covered only total disability.

Total disability in policy terms means complete physical separation of limbs above the wrist or ankle. Here, the policyholder could have received claim if he had identified the loophole in the policy, and opted for one covering partial dismemberment.

Therefore, before taking a personal accident cover, check the policy for the following points to avoid any unpleasant surprises during claim.

    Coverage

Make sure the policy covers a wide range of accidents at home and workplace. It should include all the daily activities that may lead to an accident such road accidents, rail accidents, terrorist attacks, and natural disaster.

Further, read the glossary of the policy document carefully to understand which clauses are covered and the terms and conditions behind them. For example, in many accident insurance policies hospitalization expenses can be claimed if the insured is admitted within seven days of the accident, and stays a minimum of twenty-four hours as an inpatient.

    Premiums

The value of premiums is calculated based on sum insured, policy duration, and add-ons. Assessing your current income, future potential income, and extent of liability, you can determine the sum insured.

Companies even offer customers optimizing an insurance plan and premiums to suit their budget needs. In addition, one can even opt for additional riders to include more risks to be covered in the policy.

    Benefits

A good accident insurance policy must include family benefits, daily allowance during hospitalization and child education support in case of an accident. Look out for other benefits that suit your requirements and budget needs.

    Exclusions

Familiarize yourself with the exclusions and limitations for which the insurer is not liable under the policy. Some of the major exclusions that accident insurance does not cover are death, injury, illness, or disablement due to:

    • Deliberate self-injury
    • Suicide or attempted suicide
    • Influence of intoxicating substances such as liquor or drugs
    • Participation in adventure sports
    • Mental or nervous disorders
    • Venereal diseases
    • War, nuclear perils, childbirth or pregnancy

    Insurer

Nowadays, insurance companies offer a wide range of customizable accident insurance policies. You can choose an insurance provider with an impeccable track record by checking their:

    • Claim settlement ratio
    • Feedback response
    • Customer support
    • Quality rating
    • Premium cost-effectiveness with respect to other companies

    Better Safe than Sorry

It is never too late to opt for accident insurance even if you have a life insurance policy. It covers a gaping hole of the life insurance by offering additional coverage in case of disability. Further, no matter what the magnitude of accident, you and your family can return to the same financial condition prior to the loss. Thus, before an accident makes a huge dent in your savings, Personal Accident Insurance to make a well-informed decision.

  • 56% of the Indian Population Still Not Covered

    by Almog Ramrajkar | Oct 31, 2023

A vast section of the Indian population continues to be outside the purview of health insurance , found a report titled ‘Indian Life and Health Insurance Sectors’ from consulting firm Milliman.

The report found only 44% of the total population in the country to have a health insurance policy as of 2017. It essentially means 56% of the country’s 1.3 billion people don’t have a health cover.

The report also found the private sector to be spending a significant chunk of the healthcare expenditure in India at 70%, with the government spending only 30%. Contrary to this, the federal and state government in the US contribute as much as 45%.

Though health insurance penetration has gone up over the last few years, the market is still significantly untapped. While 76% of the population didn’t have any health cover in 2013-14, the number dropped to 56% during 2016-17. The Milliman report found the number of uncovered people by subtracting the covered people from the population estimate as given in the National Health Profile.

The report also found standalone health insurers gaining a significant presence in the retail segment between 2013-17. Experts attribute this rise to the ability of standalone health insurers to innovate their best health insurance products and aligning them with the needs of customers.

The report also says that the ambitious Aayushman Bharat Scheme launched by the Government this year, that plans to cover over 10 crore poor and vulnerable families offering coverage up to ₹5 lakh per family, will upgrade over 1.5 lakh sub-centres to wellness centres by 2022. It’s anticipated that those not eligible for coverage under Aayushman Bharat will opt for private insurance.

  • What Are Common Accident Insurance Terms?

    by Almog Ramrajkar | Oct 31, 2023

Home is like a heaven on earth, it is where we get peace of mind. However, for a physically challenged person, the structures we normally use in building a home could prove a barrier. A few structural changes such as installing a ramp and lower workspace go a long way in making their lives safer, more comfortable and avoid accidents.

Here are 14 ways - architectural, technological and non-electrical - that will help improve the quality of life for the physically challenged:

Provide Enhanced Ease by Modifying Home Layout

The home architecture should be conducive to safe movement in and around the home. Customizing the house layout, without compromising the decor will facilitate easy movement:

    1. Build ramps (in addition to staircases) for easy access wherever possible
    2. Frame widened doorways for effortless passage in and out of the house
    3. Build easy-slide drawers in cupboards and wardrobes
    4. Design a lower kitchen counter and sink for easy reach
    5. Install low level switch boards
    6. Design accessible layouts for bathrooms and toilets to avoid accidents caused due to slipping
    7. Place workspaces like desks, countertops, telephones and other appliances at reachable heights

    Enhance Convenience Leveraging Technology

In this technology-driven era, a new technology is developed each day. It can be a completely new invention or an upgraded version of existing technology. Electrical innovations have touched the sky in recent years. Several such innovations have greatly improved convenience for the physically challenged, some of which are:

    1. Wheel-in showers help the disabled to enjoy their morning bath on their seat
    2. Specially designed equipment operated by speech provide a great support to people who are visually impaired
    3. A recent and unique innovation, LCS or Lip Controlled System serves a human-computer interface controlled by actions of lower lip (sipping and puffing)
    4. Talking keypad phones are available to facilitate communication for those who are unable to see
    5. For people with speech disabilities, eye-tracking systems amplify the action of eye retina into digital signals to control the mouse cursor that can play games, run applications like Solitaire as well as Skype.
    6. Special devices known as Telecommunication Devices for Deaf (TDDs) help people with hearing impairments to communicate to others via text and a modem use

These small modifications can bring a huge change in providing a quality and accident free life to people with disabilities. The convenience, ease and safety that their house provides, rebuilds their confidence and self-esteem, making them independent.

  • 10 Health Treatment Removed From Optional Cover BY IRDAI

    by Almog Ramrajkar | Oct 31, 2023

The Insurance and Regulatory Authority of India (IRDAI) in a recent notification has removed some items from the list of “optional cover” like psychiatric treatment, dental procedures, infertility and stem cell treatment. However, the notification was inconclusive in nature and has only created further ambiguity on whether such removal of items is to facilitate their mandatory cover or not.

In the notification, the IRDAI said in a partial modification of guidelines on standardisation of health insurance business some items have been deleted from the said list of ‘‘items for which optional cover may be offered by insurers’’.

These items mentioned in the IRDAI notification included assisted conception procedure, hormone replacement therapy, infertility, sub-fertility, obesity treatment, dental treatment that do not require hospitalization, treatment of sexually transmitted diseases, psychiatric and psychosomatic procedures, any expense when the patient is found affected with retro virus or suffering from HIV/AIDS, stem cell implantation, corrective surgery for refractive error, surgery and storage and aesthetic treatment and surgery.

The chief product officer of a leading insurance company said, “In the 2016 list of optional cover, there are 199 items. IRDAI has deleted some of these items. Being optional these were not covered by the insurers. Now, the companies have to examine whether they like to cover them or mention them as permanent exclusions. Covering all these in the policies is not easy as it will need product modification and have a pricing impact”.

“IRDAI has corrected an anomaly as these treatments were part of the non-payable items. Now, they can be included in the product design,” said Sanjay Datta, chief underwriting, claims and reinsurance - ICICI Lombard. He added that these items that were not a part of the hospitalisation cover earlier could now be covered as add-ons.
