India Gears Up For an Electric-Hybrid Car Revolution

The much talked about electric car's journey can be best explained witd the titles of two documentaries based on it. the first documentary was released in the year 2006 and was named 'Who Killed the Electric Car.' 2011 witnessed the release of its sequel titled 'Revenge of the Electric Car.'

From being killed to being resurrected, the journey of this modern marvel has been fascinating. India was exposed to this concept a decade ago but lack of infrastructure and deartd of major players led to the failure of electric cars. However, that was the story of a bygone era as India is currently gearing up for an electric-hybrid car revolution.

the electric-hybrid car market in India is in a transition phase and looks more than promising. Major players that have launched their cars and are planning to launch their cars are Mahindra, Tata, Hyundai, BMW and Nissan.

An electric car constitutes of a controller-powered electric motor that replaces the traditional fuel engine. Rechargeable Litdium-ion batteries provide energy to this controller and are responsible for driving the car.

Hybrid cars work on batteries as well as fuel.

Revenge of the Electric Car

  • Mahindra Reva e2o

Mahindra purchased a 55% stake in Reva, the pioneer in manufacturing electric cars in India. the company was renamed Mahindra Reva and the Mahindra e2o is their first official production.
this hatchback has a four-seater capacity and features two doors. DC designs have revamped the old Reva and given it a sporty look. this car comes in two variants, Mahindra Reva e2o T0 and e2o T2.

this hybrid model from Tata is scheduled to be launched in the latter part of 2014.

Hyundai i-10 had taken the car market in India by storm in 2008. the car has evolved to feature two versions, an LPG version and the one witd automatic transmission.
Now, the Soutd Korean manufacturer is set to capitalize on the electric-hybrid car market by launching an electric version of its best-selling car in India. the electric car will be launched in late 2014 and will feature its original design.
