Whether you are looking to revamp your house or simply refurbish old items, here are some DIY tips to impress your guests without breaking the bank:
1. No-sew Pillow Pocket
Keep the remote control in easy reach with a pillow pocket. All you need is a throw pillow with a removable cover, a pocket (or pockets) from a pair of jeans (men's jeans work best size wise) and fusible webbing (found at fabric stores). Cut the whole pocket out of the pants. Sandwich the webbing between the cover and the back of the pocket edges. Next, iron the layers together. Once done, put the cover back on and settle in.

Don't be closed-minded and throw away old cabinet doors. With paint and a pair of drawer pulls, a salvaged cabinet door can make a great tray for entertaining. Fill any holes in the board with wood fillers from a hardware store and let it dry for at least 2 hours. After this, sand and paint the surface. Make sure you pre-drill holes and screw in handles of about 4 inches on each side.
3. Tack Away
Gone are the days when upholstery tacks were restricted only to sofas and furniture. This fabric finisher is back in the game and makes an inexpensive way to add some zest to the otherwise plain and boring pieces of wood furniture. Buy tacks from a hardware or fabric store and push or tap them along the lines of a table, bench, chair or any other piece of furniture for an eye-catching accent.
4. Sweater Coaster
If you happen to accidentally wash your sweater in hot water or simply possess a worn-out cardigan, use this trick to turn them into funky coasters. Wash 100 percent wool in hot water, and then throw it in the dryer along with jeans. After three rounds, your sweater should feel taut and felt-like. Use a pencil and a large-mouthed glass to trace circles onto the fabric and snip out a set. You can further get creative and add lace or other materials to the edges or stick on a bow for a more personalized look.
5. Curated Artwork
Unite kids' drawings as a collection or divide a single painting by using a common color scheme and a grid of frames. Scan sketches and drawings, and then use a digital graphics program (like Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop) to add colored backgrounds. Along with adding a contemporary twist to your walls, it is also a cost-effective way to give your walls a dose of color.
6. Pretty Placemats
Give your dining table a facelift with easy-to-make placemats. To start, gather some heavyweight fabric (usually used for home decoration), scissors and iron on vinyl topping, which is available at most fabric stores. Cut the fabric in 12 x 17 inch rectangles and iron each one. For each mat, cut two rectangles of the same size from the vinyl. Next, iron a piece of vinyl onto each side of the placemat. Finally, trim the edges of your mats to get rid of any spills.
