Deadly collisions that claimed the lives of celebrities
Hema Malini was involved in a deadly car crash between her Mercedes and a Maruti Alto in Rajasthan in July 2015. While she was lucky to escape with minor injuries, some other celebrities have not been so fortunate.
Here are some of the national and international artists who lost their lives in a car crash:
1. Paul Walker
Hollywood was left stunned by the sudden death of actor Paul Walker of Fast & Furious fame in November 2013. The 40-year-old died while taking his friend Roger Rodas for a spin in a Porsche Carrera GT. Walker was in the passenger seat when the car, which was traveling at approximately 90 mph, slammed into a light pole and burst into flames.
2. Jaspal Bhatti
Indian actor-comedian, the man behind the successful comedy "Flop Show", succumbed to his injuries after an unfortunate car accident in 2012. The incident took place when he was driving back to Jalandhar from Bhatinda after promoting his film "Power Cut".
3. James Dean
British actor Alec Guinness felt his co-star James Dean's Porsche looked 'sinister' and he said, "If you get in that car, you will be found dead in it by this time next week." Seven days after he uttered these prophetic words, James died from a broken neck, when his Porsche Spyder 550 collided with another car in September 1955. 24-year-old Hollywood actor James Dean was the first to be posthumously nominated for Academy Best Actor Award.
4. Grace Kelly
American actress Grace Kelly, who later became the Princess of Monaco, died in a car crash in September 1982. The former Hollywood star of Mogambo fame suffered a stroke while she was driving her Rover, causing her to miss a hairpin turn on a windy road and somersaulted off a 120-feet cliff. The 52-year-old succumbed to her injuries a day later.
5. Ryan Dunn
After risking his life performing deadly pranks and stunts on the TV show "Jackass", star Ryan Dunn died when his Porsche 911 flew off a Pennsylvania road in 2011. According to a police report, the 34-year-old had a blood alcohol level of more than twice the legal limit. He was also driving at 130 mph when the vehicle smashed into a guardrail, crashed into the woods and burst into flames.
6. Sam Kinson
Famed comedian Sam Kinison died after a pickup truck slammed head on to the vehicle he was driving. The former preacher was driving from his California home to a sold-out show in Laughlin, Nevada. He suffered a dislocated neck, among other injuries.
Accidents are just that, chance events that can injure or kill, sometimes even for no apparent fault by anyone. However, it is always a safe bet to abide by safety rules and regulations like wearing your seatbelt or helmet, following traffic signals, etc. It is also advisable to have a personal accident cover just in case.
Although none of these are foolproof methods to avoid road accidents, they do help decrease the impact of injuries. It is also wise to invest in a comprehensive motor insurance policy to safeguard your finances in case of an accident.
