The Best of Beijing

March 30, 2015

Like most modern cities of the world with a historical past, Beijing is caught between two time zones. Its glorious history is awash with intrigue, power struggles, politics, tradition, culture and architecture. In its present avatar, Beijing seems to be in an urgent need to look modern. One of Asia's most influential centers of education, trade and culture, Beijing, in its own graceful way has seen its rise and fall and rise, again, and has taken it all with panache and dignity.

Best of Beijing

Beijing's Intriguing History

Literally meaning Northern Capital, Beijing first came into contention some 2000 years ago when it was made the capital of the Kingdom of Yan. Its glory increased when the Mongols ruled a great empire from Beijing and named it the Great Capital. It remained thus till the Kuomintang overthrew the Manchu Dynasty and moved the capital to Nanjing. But after 20 years, the Communists, under the leadership of Mao Zedong, formed the People's Republic and moved the capital back to Beijing.

A Tourist's Paradise

The first thing that strikes a visitor to Beijing is its vastness. Although the second largest city in the most populous country in the world, with a population of close to 22 million, Beijing is surprisingly vast with an airy feel about itself. Its municipal area is around 16,410 sq. kms.

Beiging National Stadium

Beijingers are warm, intelligent people with a great sense of humor and a keen interest in politics and current affairs. Among landmarks of the city, the Tiananmen Square in Dongchen District is undoubtedly the most important. Surrounding the square are grand buildings like the Great Hall of the People, the Museum of Chinese History, the Museum of the Chinese Revolution, the Qianmen Gate and the Forbidden City. The newest entrant to the list of landmarks is the National Stadium (the Bird's Nest), whose unique design caught the fancy of the world during the 2008 Summer Olympics at Beijing. Other landmarks that vie for the tourists' attention are the remains of the medieval city (Ming Dynasty City Wall Site Park and the Drum and Bell Towers) and contemporary structures like CCTV Building and the World Trade Centre Tower III.

The Forbidden Palace and Other World Heritage Sites

The biggest attraction of Beijing is the Forbidden Palace, the world's biggest palace. It was home to the Ming and Qing dynasties and the seat of absolute power in China during the time. The Temple of Heaven and the Yonghegong are equally impressive temples not to be missed.

There are 7 UNESCO World Heritage Sites within Beijing - Apart from the Forbidden City and the Temple of Heaven, they are Summer Palace, Ming Tombs, Zhoukoudian, Great Wall and the Grand Canal.

Of Food, Festivals and Fun

The city hosts many festivals and fairs throughout the year like the Temple Fair, Music Festival and Yanqing Ice and Snow Tourism Festival. Food is a Chinese obsession and Beijing takes pride in serving some of the best dishes in the world, from the famous Peking Roast Duck to the dumplings and noodles. There's Sichuanese food known for its liberal use of fiery spices to the deliciously fragrant Uighur cuisine.

Things To Lookout For

A delightful city with something for everyone, Beijing offers an opportunity of a lifetime. The major downside is the extremely poor quality of air in the city due to geographical, industrial and automotive problems. It is best to protect oneself from common respiratory problems that most tourists are likely to encounter. Besides, opting for a travel insurance plan secures tourists from any unforeseen expenses like loss of baggage or medical emergency during the course of their trip.

Climate of Beijing
Predominantly monsoon-influenced, with cold and dry winters, oppressively hot summers and warm springs (with a lot of dust storms)
