Influenza Diagnostic Tests Method

Influenza is detected using rapid diagnostic tests, RT-PCR, and serologic exams. RT-PCR is considered the most accurate method. Early diagnosis ensures appropriate care, especially for high-risk patients. Health insurance may cover diagnostic costs.

Influenza, generally known as flu, is a highly infectious viral disease affecting millions annually. It is not a serious condition and affected people usually get better on their own in the majority of the cases. In some high-risk groups, influenza can cause complications and become deadly. Thus, early Influenza diagnosis is crucial for getting immediate medical care and stopping its spread.

During a season, when flu is widespread, the doctor can diagnose the condition just with symptoms. Otherwise, the physician may order an influenza diagnostic test to confirm the disease.

Diagnosis of Influenza

An influenza diagnostic test is done to detect the presence of the influenza viruses in blood. Some of the examinations employed for influenza diagnosis are:

  • Rapid Influenza Diagnostic Tests (RIDTs):

This examination can detect the existence of influenza viral antigens in blood in a few minutes. They are widely employed in hospitals and infirmaries owing to their immediate results. The test generally has moderate sensitivity and high specificity.

  • Reverse Transcriptase Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) Test:

This molecular investigation is the gold criterion for influenza diagnosis. It detects the viral RNA in respiratory specimens and delivers highly accurate results.

  • Viral Culture:

Viral culture is a time-consuming procedure and not customarily employed for standard diagnosis. It is usually employed for public health purposes for the identification of the exact strain of the virus causing the epidemic.

  • Rapid Molecular Assays:

These examinations are used to detect the RNA of influenza virus in the upper respiratory tract. They are often used to confirm the diagnosis when other rapid tests yield inconclusive results.

  • Serologic examinations:

These examinations assist in detecting the existence of antibodies generated by the immune system against influenza A or B virus. They usually help determine any previous infections but sometimes stand in for a quick diagnosis.

Conclusion

Early detection of influenza has a critical role in lessening its effect on people and society. In many people, the disease goes on its own without taking any specific treatment. If the condition gets severe, antiviral medicines are prescribed by the healthcare provider. Health insurance usually covers the expense of influenza diagnostic tests and treatment.
