Pertussis, or whooping cough, is an infectious respiratory infection that can be particularly dangerous to babies, children, and individuals with weak immune systems. While vaccination is the best protection, early pertussis treatment is vital to manage symptoms and control further complications.

Here are the different treatments for pertussis, such as antibiotics, supportive care, and symptom relief, so you can effectively manage this infection.

What are pertussis treatment methods?

Before you begin treatment, it's necessary to determine if it is whooping cough. Physicians typically do this by drawing a blood sample or swabbing the back of your throat to test for the bacteria.

1.    Antibiotics can assist

If treated early, antibiotics can shorten the duration and severity of whooping cough, but they might not work if the infection lasts for weeks. Antibiotics are usually prescribed for 5 to 7 days, and it is essential to take the entire course to avoid long-term illness and minimise the risk of passing on the infection.

2.    Cough suppressants

Cough suppressants are generally not recommended for children but may be used for elderly patients under a physician’s care. Warm fluids such as honey (for children over one-year-old), herbal teas, or broths can soothe throat soreness.

3.    Hydration and rest

Persistent coughing and vomiting can lead to dehydration, so it's essential to replenish fluids with water, juices, or rehydration solutions to avoid complications. Rest is also important in recovery, as it helps the body retrieve its strength and fight off the infection.

4.    Hospitalisation

Infants and young children at risk for complications such as pneumonia or difficulty breathing may require hospitalisation. In severe instances, oxygen therapy can help keep blood oxygen levels up and IV fluids up if the affected individual is dehydrated. Respiratory support, including mechanical ventilation, may be necessary if a person can’t breathe properly after severe coughing fits.

Conclusion

Vaccination provides the best protection against pertussis. However, because vaccine effectiveness can wane over time, children and adults should remain attentive and take additional steps to protect themselves from exposure. Early detection and timely pertussis treatment are vital for controlling and preventing infection spread.

It may also be worth looking into medical insurance, which can alleviate the higher expenses of tests and treatment. You won’t hesitate to get the medical treatment you need with comprehensive medical coverage.
