What Are the Side Effects of Amla Juice: Important Cautions

Amla (Indian gooseberry) juice is widely celebrated for its impressive health benefits. It boosts immunity, improves digestion and enhances skin and hair health. However, it may not suit everyone and can lead to certain side effects if consumed excessively. From digestive discomfort to dental erosion, it's important to understand the raw amla side effects and consume it wisely.

Side effects of amla juice

Here are some of the side effects of amla juice:

  • Constipation: Amla contains tannins that have astringent effects on the body. Excessive amounts of tannins can dry out the intestinal lining, harden the stool and make it difficult to pass them. Additionally, too much gooseberry juice at once might disrupt the gut's natural balance, causing constipation.
  • Bloating: Fibre-rich content of gooseberry juices can lead to gas build-up and bloating, especially in people with sensitive stomachs. Moreover, natural sugars and fibre in amlas ferment in the intestines, causing slow digestion and bloating.
  • Hypoglycaemia: One of the side effects of eating amla daily is low blood sugar levels (hypoglycaemia) caused by glucose metabolism. Gooseberry juice can stimulate the pancreas to release more insulin, which helps lower blood sugar levels. Although this effect can be beneficial for diabetics, excessive glucose metabolism can adversely affect them.
  • Erodes tooth enamel: Amla juice is highly acidic, and excessive consumption can erode tooth enamel. When consumed frequently, ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) can soften and weaken the enamel.

Conclusion

Gooseberries are highly nutritious. They are rich in vitamin C, which boosts immunity and makes your skin glow. However, it's important to be aware of the disadvantages of amla juice. Some people may experience bloating, constipation, loss of tooth enamel and more.

If you suffer from these issues after consuming gooseberries or their juice, consult a doctor immediately. To cover medical expenses, get yourself health insurance. The policy can cover the cost of consultations, treatments and therapies. Comprehensive coverage helps you access quality healthcare without financial strain.
