Top 8 Benefits Of Coconut Water To Your Body

Coconut water is extremely invigorating. It is full of electrolytes and many other vital nutrients. It not only works wonders for you if you are dehydrated but has tremendous health benefits too. This refreshing drink has sugars, minerals, vitamins, amino acids, and phytohormones, apart from inorganic ions which give a boost to the body’s antioxidants. This wonder drink can protect against heart attack and keep hypertension at bay. The meat of the coconut fights inflammation, helping wounds to heal quickly. Many sportspersons swear by the efficacy of coconut water to restore their frayed tissues after a strenuous workout. Most importantly, coconut water is very effective for treating dehydration, particularly in cases of severe diarrhea. So, let us look at the many salutary benefits of coconut water on our health.

  • Coconut water improves performance during exercise: Coconut water, or nariyal pani as it is called colloquially, has more electrolytes than even colas. It has hydrating effects which are just like the common carbohydrate-electrolyte sports drinks, or the so-called energy drinks. The effects of nariyal pani during exercise or performance are as good as that of sports drinks, but coconut water doesn’t contain added sugars and sweeteners, and is a natural source of potassium, so, it can be used as a substitute for other sports drinks.
  • Consumption of coconut water is also easy on the stomach compared to carbohydrate-electrolyte drinks. Because coconut water has electrolytes, it is very effective in treating muscle cramps, providing almost immediate relief. But, you should first consult your doctor, if you are a sportsperson, and are planning to take nariyal pani after heavy workouts, as coconut water is low in carbs and sodium, two nutrients which are vital for supporting you through long workouts, which can cause excess loss of water through sweat, and therefore a loss of sodium. However, if you are planning to do just light workouts, coconut water is ideal as a post-workout drink. And on a hot summer afternoon after sweating profusely, hardly anything can match the delicious coconut drink.
  • Nariyal pani is good for heart health: Studies have decisively shown that drinking coconut water can lower blood cholesterol levels. And, as we all know, it is the bad LDL cholesterol that is the culprit in most heart attacks and strokes. Coconut water maintains the levels of HDL, which is good cholesterol while battling against the increase in LDL, or bad cholesterol. Studies have also shown that the effect of drinking coconut water was similar to the effect of lovastatin, a medication that inhibits the build-up of cholesterol in the arteries. Nariyal pani is also known to reduce hypertension. This is achieved by the antioxidant levels and insulin sensitivity.
  • Nariyal pani improves digestive health: The rich fiber content in coconut water can produce laxative effects, besides the fact that it is a natural diuretic. Coconut water is great for treating diarrhea. It has iron, calcium, and magnesium. Manganese has an electrolytic balance which is the same as human blood.  Drinking a glass of coconut water within an hour after a bout of diarrhea can be of immense help. Moreover, coconut water is good for countering sodium-induced bloating. It not only flushes out the sodium from the body but also streamlines the cleansing process. Electrolytes in nariyal pani promote pH balance in the body, which is vital for keeping acid reflux in check.
  • Coconut water helps overcome hangovers: Though studies are not conclusive, it is generally accepted that coconut water replenishes the potassium you lose when you consume too much alcohol, thereby helping you overcome the terrible hangovers in the morning after.

  • Nariyal pani can lower blood glucose levels: L-arginine, a compound found in abundance in coconut water, is known for its anti-diabetic properties and is therefore very helpful for patients with diabetes. Coconut water, moreover, also battles the oxidative stress that a diabetic person experiences. It also reduces the levels of hemoglobin A1c, which increases diabetes risk when its levels are high. Since coconut water is full of fiber and is low in carbs, you can make it a staple in your diabetes meal. Be careful, however, to only go for natural coconut water, as packaged coconut water is likely to contain artificial sweeteners.
  • Coconut water can help treat kidney stones: Studies have shown that coconut water consumption helps in expelling excess potassium, citrate and chlorine from the body, which can lower the risk of formation of kidney stones. It is also believed that treatment with nariyal pani prevents crystal deposits in the renal tissue. Nariyal pani also reduces crystallization in the urine and prevents oxidative stress in the kidneys, promoting renal health. Apart from getting rid of kidney stones, nariyal pani also cures bladder infections. It is because coconut water also has antibacterial properties. If your kidney problems are severe, you would do well to consult your doctor instead of relying solely on coconut water to overcome your distress. It’s better to secure yourself with a health insurance policy to safeguard you from medical expenses and much more.
  • It strengthens bones, and helps treat acne and psoriasis: Coconut water is a very good source of calcium and therefore promotes bone health. It has antibacterial properties, owing to the presence of lauric acid in it, which helps treat acne. It indirectly helps treat psoriasis. Because water prevents dehydration, it also helps with issues like psoriasis. Dehydration prevents the body from eliminating toxins through the skin, which can cause psoriasis, and since coconut water prevents dehydration, it also indirectly prevents psoriasis.

So, how much nariyal pani should you consume per day?

Though coconut water has several health benefits, is very tasty and satiating, especially on a hot summer day, you must be careful not to drink too much of it as it can cause hyperkalemia or potassium toxicity. Eight ounces, or 226 grams, of coconut water, has about 600 mg potassium. The recommended daily allowance of potassium is 2,600 to 3,400 mg. If you have severe kidney disease or diabetes, you have to be extremely careful. You must limit your consumption of coconut water to once every alternate day, and that too after consulting your doctor. Since there is no authoritative data on the safe upper limit for consumption of nariyal pani, empirical evidence suggests that you should stick to consuming just one coconut water per day. Potassium deficiency is rare, and chances are that you are getting enough of it in your daily diet, therefore do not overdo drinking coconut water. However, there is no gainsaying that there is nothing like a cool drink of nariyal pani on a hot and humid afternoon, or when you are feeling too fatigued after some strenuous workout.
