Riding a bike provides a sense of freedom which is beyond words. It is also one of the most convenient modes to commute, relieving you from traffic snarls and erratic public transports. So, if you are willing to learn how to ride a bike, this article is the one for you.

These simple instructions will teach you basic bike riding tips, and will prepare you to get your own driving license.

Earn a Learner’s Permit and Buy Proper Safety Equipment

The first thing you need to do is acquire a learner’s license before you can start learning to ride a bike. So, check the minimum age requirement in your state and apply for it at your nearest Regional Transport Office (RTO). Also, purchase safety equipment like helmet, gloves, leather jacket, sturdy boots, and eyeglasses before taking on the challenge.

Know About Various Parts and Controls in a Bike

After you’ve earned your bike learning permit, and are equipped with all the safety gears, it’s time to get familiar with various parts and controls before you can begin learning how to ride a bike:

  • Clutch lever: It is typically found on the left side of the handle-bar. The function of the clutch lever is to engage power to the engine.
  • Throttle: Located on the right handle-bar grip, it is similar to the accelerator of a car. Used to control power sent to the rear wheel.
  • Gear shift lever: This is usually a pedal on the left side in front of the footrest for the rider. It is needed to shift up or down one gear at a time.
  • Brake levers: The rear brake pedal is located near the right foot peg of the rider whereas the front brake lever is on the right side of the handle-bar in front of throttle.
  • Ignition switch: Often located on the right side of the handle-bar beneath the throttle, it is pressed once to start the motorcycle engine.
  • The dash: The remaining parts of the dash consist of a speedometer, tachometer, and the indicator signals used for turning left or right.

Start the Bike and Practice with Clutch

Now that you’re familiar with the controls, it’s time to fire up the engine and ride your bike! To do this, first turn the key to ON position and shift to the neutral gear. Then pull the clutch in and press the ignition switch. You will see that the tachometer rises to idle engine speed.

Now use the clutch lever carefully to move your bike. First pull the clutch lever in, and use your left foot to shift down to first gear. Then slowly release the clutch lever and gradually roll on the throttle. Now the bike will start moving. In case you stall the bike, shift to neutral and repeat the above process.

Upshift or Downshift the Gears to Control Speed

It’s time now to change your gears and increase the speed of your bike. The first gear is usually for starting the motorcycle and slow speed manoeuvring. To change gears, roll off the throttle, pull the clutch lever in and firmly shift the lever up. Now, slowly release the clutch and roll the throttle simultaneously. Follow similar steps by pressing the lever downwards to bring down the gears.

Use Brakes to Stall the Bike or Decrease the Speed

This is a very important bike riding tip and one that is necessary to stay safe. You may need to stop the bike suddenly or come to a halt at a red signal. Simply roll off the throttle and pull the clutch lever in and gradually squeeze the front and rear brakes simultaneously. Remember to downshift the gears, when required while you are using the brakes.

Always wear the safety equipment while riding a two-wheeler and maintain safe distance with other vehicles. No matter how many precautions you take, there is always an element of risk while riding. Secure your bike with the best two-wheeler insurance policy, which not only secures your finances from natural or man-made disasters but also provides accidental coverage for driver and pillion rider.
