Things you need to check out before leaving the showroom with a new car

Whether it's the first car in your family or a new addition to your garage, buying a new car is always an exhilarating process. The excitement of acquiring the keys of a new set of wheels often rushes buyers through the sign-off process. But, before leaving the showroom, it is important to thoroughly inspect your car for any damage.

A new car might have a manufacturing defect which will not be visible unless a close inspection is carried out. Often dealers use new cars as demo cars by removing the odometer, making them susceptible to wear and tear. And not to forget, there may be defects arising during transportation from the dockyard to the showroom as well.

Here is a list of crucial issues that must be checked before leaving the showroom with your new car:

Prior Registration

It is recommended to visit the dealership stockyard before registration and check the month and year of manufacturing. Once the car gets registered in your name, there is nothing much that you can do.

Ask your car dealer for Form 22 issued by the manufacturer. It has all the details about the engine, chassis, manufacturing, etc. Many dealerships overcharge their customers for various taxes, look out and avoid paying extra.

Preparation

Confirm the date of delivery and ask the dealership if your car is ready before visiting the dealership. Visit the showroom in broad daylight as the night may conceal certain defects.

Carry all the necessary documents including credit card or cash if any payment formalities are to be completed. It is a good idea to ask a friend or family member to accompany you for their observations and suggestions.

At the Showroom

While at the showroom, thoroughly examine the car for any signs of damage. Begin with the exteriors and look for any dents, dimples or scrapes. Check for any re-paint or repair job that has been carried out hastily.

Look out for the interiors, check out the dashboard, seats, door pads and the overall finish. Check for floor carpets, seat belts and various dashboard controls. Start the engine and check the air conditioner for its cooling.

See if all the lights are operating fine. Look out for the tread of tyres, they should be adequate without any signs of wear. The exhaust must not emit black fumes and the engine must not vibrate excessively.

Final Inspection

Once you have inspected the car thoroughly:

  • Ask the salesperson to give you a demonstration of different features of the car
  • Take your car for a test drive and check its steering and manoeuvrability.
  • Drive over different surfaces to identify any engineering fault.
  • Accelerate hard to test the pickup and check the braking.
  • Visit the service department and get familiarised with service centre facilities.

Once you see everything is perfect, complete the documentation formalities. Take a copy of all receipts, sales certificates and other documents. Take owner manuals, duplicate keys, warranty papers and roadside assistance contact details. Finally, opt for a comprehensive car insurance policy with at least a year of coverage and zero depreciation coverage to get the best value for your money.
