Diagnosis of Seizures

Seizure diagnosis includes neurological exams, EEG tests, and imaging scans like MRI or CT to identify underlying causes. Understanding triggers and patterns helps determine the best treatment approach, improving seizure management and quality of life for patients.

A seizure is a neurological problem characterised by abnormal electrical activity in the brain. This results in changes in behaviour, consciousness, memory, and feeling. A seizure may be partial or generalised. The partial seizure is more common and is associated with simple symptoms. The generalised seizure presents more complex. Seizure nursing diagnosis is important for the healthcare team to make a treatment plan that works well for the particular patient.

What are the Diagnoses of Seizures Disease?

The diagnosis of seizure is done by several tests including physical examination, laboratory tests, and imaging studies. The unprovoked seizure that occurs again and again is called epilepsy.  Accurate nursing diagnosis for epilepsy and seizure plays an important role in the management and cure of this neurological disease. The following tests are used to diagnose seizures:

  • Complete neurological examination –The doctor would examine the patient for the evaluation of his/her behaviour, consciousness, mental state, and motor skills.
  • Blood and body fluid tests – A blood test is usually done to identify any infection that might impact brain activity and to check blood glucose levels. The level of electrolytes is also checked in body fluids to find any imbalance.
  • Spinal tap – When an infection is suspected as the reason behind unprovoked seizure, then a lumber puncture or spinal tap is done. In this process, a small amount of cerebrospinal fluid is removed to test the infectious agent present that might be the reason behind the seizure. It is usually done in priority when the patient has a fever and shows a history of immunosuppression.
  • Electroencephalogram (EEG) – This is done to record the electrical activities of the brain. The particular pattern of waves in an EEG determines whether the patient may have a seizure or not.
  • Imaging tests –Different imaging tests are done to identify any changes in the brain that might lead to seizures. Some imaging modalities used to identify internal brain changes are Computerized tomography (CT), Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), Positron emission tomography (PET), Single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), etc.

Conclusion

When a doctor suspects a seizure, he/she would find out if the seizure was provoked or unprovoked. It is done through a thorough physical examination and medical history of the patient. Once a seizure disorder nursing diagnosis is done, medications are recommended by the doctor as per the needs of the patient. The outcome of the therapy depends upon the cause of the seizure. The treatment of seizure involves a significant financial burden and it is always advisable to go for a good health insurance policy to cover the expenses.
