Psoriasis is an immune-mediated disorder that causes inflammation due to the dysfunction of the immune system in the body. This condition may show visible signs of symptoms that include inflammation such as thick areas of discoloured skin covered with scales. These thick, scaly areas are called plaques. Raised plaques are also formed that may look different for different skin types. The overactivity of the immune system speeds up skin cell growth. Normally, the skin cells completely grow and shed in 3 to 4 weeks or a month. But with psoriasis, skin cells reform in only three or four days, and the skin cells pile up on the surface of the skin. This results in psoriasis plaques, which flare-ups the condition on any part of the body, but most commonly, these are found on the elbows, knees and scalp.

Ways to prevent psoriasis

There isn't a way to entirely prevent psoriasis but we can reduce the risk by following the doctor's guidance that involves treatment, living a healthy lifestyle, taking good care of our skin and avoiding using skincare products that cause an outbreak of symptoms. Following some preventive measures can decrease the chances of flare-up of this disease.

1. Using Moisturising Creams

The symptoms due to psoriasis get worse when the skin is dry, so it is good to moisturize our skin with creams and ointments or with petroleum jelly that traps moisture beneath the skin. These techniques help to remove the scales. We can also cover the affected area with plastic wrap or another waterproof material and leave it overnight for better results.

2. Taking care of our skin

It is important to take care of our skin when we have patches and scales on it. We should not rub our skin over the affected area as this may make the skin worse. We should also avoid using hot water while taking a bath.

3. Avoiding dry, cold weather

Climate change can have a big effect on psoriasis, so it is important to take extra care when there is climatic change. Hot weather is preferred over cold weather as cold weather makes skin dry, which worsens the condition.

4. Using a humidifier

Keeping our skin moist and healthy is important. We can use a humidifier in the house when the air inside the house is dry.

5. Avoiding medications that cause flare-ups

  • Quinidine, a medicine used for irregular heartbeat

6. Avoiding scrapes, cuts, bumps and infections

It's super important for people with psoriasis to avoid bumps, bruises and cuts in the affected area, as the skin gets traumatised and can flare up the condition. This is called Koebner's phenomenon. To minimize the risk, we must avoid shaving, acupuncture and tattoos and take precautions to prevent ourselves from insect bites and chafing.

7. Taking UV light from the sun

The UV rays in sunlight slow down skin cell growth. So, taking a moderate dose of sun is good to prevent this condition. We must always use sunscreen as skin burns can trigger psoriasis and raise the risk of skin cancer.

8. Zap stress

Managing stress is crucial, as many of us associate healthy skin and radiance with reduced stress levels. To alleviate anxiety, we can explore relaxation techniques such as meditation or yoga. These practices are beneficial in managing the emotional impact of psoriasis.

9. Limiting alcohol intake

The intake of alcohol can worsen psoriasis symptoms. So, it is advisable to avoid taking alcohol when undergoing psoriasis treatment.

10. Exercising, eating right and maintaining a healthy weight

Exercising and maintaining a healthy weight are essential components of a holistic approach to overall well-being. Although no studies have shown a link between diet and psoriasis, experts recommend eating a well-balanced diet that's high in fruits and vegetables. This will help to keep our skin healthy and glowing.
