Lymphogranuloma Venereum (LGV) is a sexually transmitted infection that causes genital blisters in the initial stage. It is caused by a particular strain of bacteria called Chlamydia trachomatis. LGV is usually the outcome of unprotected anal, vaginal, or oral sex. LGV affects sexually active men and women aged between 15 and 40 years. Seeking timely LGV treatment is important because, if left untreated, it can cause long-term damage to the lymphatic system and increase the chances of contracting HIV and other STDs.

What is the Treatment of Lymphogranuloma Venereum?

There is no vaccine against the Chlamydia trachomatis bacteria, and the treatment of Lymphogranuloma Venereum involves using antibiotics such as doxycycline. The recommended daily antibiotic is 100 milligrams of doxycycline twice daily for 21 days. If you resist this antibiotic,  1 gram of Azithromycin can be taken orally once weekly for 3 weeks, or Erythromycin base 500 mg orally 4 times daily for 21 days. Since this regimen has not been validated, your doctor can suggest you take a Nucleic Acid Amplification Test (NAAT) to check for a complete cure from Chlamydia trachomatis 4 weeks after the completion of treatment.

It is essential to treat LGV during the first stage of infection, as in the later stages, it can lead to permanent scarring and swelling of the skin, including swelling in the genitals, rectum, etc. In the third stage, the infection may spread via the bloodstream, causing inflammation of the joints or liver, and if the infection is untreated, it can pass on to a sexual partner.

Conclusion

Lymphogranuloma Venereum is a sexually transmitted disease that needs immediate and proper treatment, as untreated conditions can cause permanent scarring of the skin on the genitals and rectum swelling, infertility, enlarged genitals, etc. Besides following the guidelines suggested by your healthcare provider and taking the proper medication, remember to seek health insurance, as this is one way to stay worry-free during medical emergencies.
