Documents needed to visit Bhutan

As Indian passport holders, you don't require a Bhutan visa for your visit. Instead, you'll need a Permit issued by the Bhutan Immigration Department in Phuentsholing, and the best part is, it's free of cost! You are required to carry any of the two valid 'Travel Documents' (a) Valid Indian Passport having validity of minimum 6 months; and/or (b) Voter Identity Card, issued by the Election Commission of India.

The documents listed below are necessary to obtain an "Entry Permit" at the Immigration Office while entering Bhutan.

  • A copy of your passport
  • If you do not have a passport, you can also produce your Voter ID card issued by the Election Commission of India
  • For children under 18, a Birth Certificate and valid school identity card must be made
  • Two passport-sized coloured photographs
  • Accommodation and lodging details, including the address of the hotel

The "Entry Permit" allow you only to visit Thimpu and Paro. To explore other parts of the country, you must acquire a special Bhutan permit for Indian citizens. The documents necessary are as follows:

  • Duly filled application form
  • It would help if you carried a photocopy of the Route Permit, which is included in your Entry Permit
  • If you are driving your car, you will also require an extension permit, which can be obtained at the Road Safety and Transportation Authority (RSTA) office
