Venice, widely known as the 'City of Canals,' is a subject of curiosity among travellers across the globe. There are many surprising things about this destination. Firstly, it is built comprising 126 islands with canals and open water separating them. The 150 watercourses act as streets, and you will find many gondolas and water buses serving as the primary modes of transportation.

But did you know that, unlike other places in Italy, Venice has restrictions on the number of tourists allowed?

Venice Tourist Limit

Effective June 2024, the city has restricted the number of people in a tour group to 25. This rule came after considering the consequences of overtourism on the ecosystem. According to reports, this historical city is sinking at a rate of 2 mm every year. The reports also suggest that by the year 2150, Venice will be completely underwater.

Here are a few other restrictions that have been put in place:

  • You are required to pay €5 as a fee to explore the historic centres of Venice.
  • If you are a day tripper caught at the centres without paying the entry fee, you may face a penalty ranging from €50 to €300.
  • The government has also banned loudspeakers to ensure Venice's sanctity remains intact.

Conclusion

Venice is one of those places you must visit at least once in your lifetime. However, before entering the city, make sure you have purchased travel insurance for Italy. This travel insurance protects you against medical emergencies, loss of Passport, and many other situations that could disrupt your plans and drain your finances.
