From pop culture images, it’s easy to assume that the climate in Egypt is only hot. While in reality, you can experience dramatic weather changes over the months.

Located at the eastern end of the Sahara, Egypt has a dry, subtropical climate. Temperatures are high during the first quarter of the year and gradually decrease, followed by dust storms, thunderstorms, and rain. Egypt's winter lasts from November to January, while summer occurs between June and August.

To experience pleasant weather in Egypt, it's best to visit during the winter and enjoy the warm sun. Alexandria, on the northern coast, receives more rainfall than Cairo, which is located in the fertile valley and delta of the Nile River. This basin covers 5% of Egypt and, due to its steady temperature, is home to the majority of the Egyptian population. While summers can be hot in this region, they are much more bearable than in other parts of the country.

Spring in Egypt

Egypt turns into a mesmerising tapestry of sceneries during springtime. While a cool breeze fills the nights, days are mildly warm, and a variety of flowers bloom across the arid landscape dotted with palms, fig trees and reeds.

As spring is about to end, around March-April, the Khamasin or hot winds commence. These are similar to the Indian loo but stir up sandstorms. Till then, it’s a good time for cultural festivities and Nile river cruises.

In May, Egypt experiences warm temperatures, with northern regions typically ranging from 68°F to 86°F (20°C to 30°C). In southern areas, temperatures can reach up to 95°F (35°C). After sunset, temperatures generally decrease to about 54°F to 68°F (about 12°C to 20°C).

Summer in Egypt

During summer, the weather in Egypt is scorching. The hottest days in Egypt span from April to August, with July typically being the hottest month. The coastlines along the Red Sea are warmer, while the Mediterranean coast to the north benefits from cooler breezes, making it more bearable. Egypt’s inland desert plains remain hot and dry.

During the summer, average high temperatures in Egypt can reach around 89.6°F (32°C), with average lows of around 73.4°F (23°C). At night, temperatures drop even further.

Pro-tip: the summer heat in Egypt can be intense, so it's vital to drink plenty of fluids and apply sunscreen.

Fall in Egypt

The hot climate in Egypt begins to ease during the fall season. From September to November, tourists start arriving to enjoy the pleasant weather and picturesque surroundings before tourism peaks in winter. This is a great time to head to the beaches and sandy oases. However, sudden sandstorms may catch you off-guard, so look out for those.

Most days temperature averages around 85 °F (29 ° C). Also, the temperatures vary from region to region by about 9 °F.  The temperature in the south can soar up to 95°F, which gradually subsides to around 68°F by November. Nights become cooler, where average temperature ranges between 59°F and 68°F in the north and 68°F and 77°F in the south.

Winter in Egypt

Winter weather in Egypt offers mild temperatures, and it is only cold for a few hours at night. December is one of the cooler months in Egypt, with daytime temperatures in the northern regions typically ranging from 59°F to 72°F (15°C to 22°C). In Cairo, for example, average high temperatures are around 67°F (19°C), and lows are about 51°F (11°C).

At night, temperatures can drop to between 50°F and 59°F (about 10°C to 15°C) in the south and about 46°F (8°C) in the north. For instance, in Aswan, average low temperatures in December are around 10.6°C (51°F), and in Alexandria, average lows are about 11°C (51°F).

Northern cities like Giza, Alexandria, and Cairo experience milder temperatures due to the Mediterranean Sea's influence. In contrast, southern inland areas like Luxor and Aswan, as well as high-altitude regions like Sinai, can be cooler and drier.

December is a popular time for tourists to explore Egypt's historical sites and landscapes, as the cooler temperatures make outdoor activities more comfortable. Cultural events, such as the Cairo International Film Festival, are also held during this season.
