How to Get Fancy Registration Numbers for Car and Bike

For many people, their cars and bikes are an extension of themselves. They go to extremes to customise their vehicles so that it reflects their personality. Another way people like personalising their cars and bikes is by opting for a fancy bike number plate at the time of vehicle registration at the local RTO.

Usually, RTO randomly assigns the next available registration number to a vehicle during the documentation process. However, if you wish for fancy bike number plates with a particular number of your choice, you can get them (provided the number is not taken by somebody else) by paying a fee. Read on to know what you need to do to have your car or bike feature in the 4-digit fancy number list.

How to get a fancy registration number for your car in India?

You can get a VIP or fancy bike number plate in India by paying a higher fee. However, that is not all. To acquire a fancy registration number, you will have to bid for the same through an e-auction of the VIP car number. Follow the steps given below if you are wondering how to get a fancy number plate for your car or bike in India:

Step 1: Visit the official website of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) and register online as a public user.

Step 2: Log into your account and choose an available fancy number.

Step 3: Next, pay the registration fees and reserve the fancy number.

Step 4: The number is kept open for reservation for some time. If within that period more than one person reserves the fancy number, then it is opened for bidding. If not, the number is given to the person who reserved it.

Step 5: If someone else has reserved the number of your choice, then bid for the VIP car number. The number will be given to whoever bids a higher amount for the number.

Step 6: When the result is declared, based on the result you can either pay the balance amount or apply for a refund.

Step 7: If you get the fancy number then for your reference and future use, print the letter of allotment.

Fees and registration charges for car and bike fancy number

The registration charges for a fancy bike number plate or that of a car vary from state to state. The rules of payment and refund are also not the same for every state. For instance, in Delhi, the registration fees for a fancy number for a bike or VIP car number are non-refundable, irrespective of whether you get the fancy number or not. Given below is the reserve charge list for fancy numbers in Delhi.

There exists a wide range of fancy numbers with various series. To get one of these series you must know how to get a custom number plate in India. The first step in getting such a number for your car or bike is to check the available numbers. You can check the availability of a VIP car number in the following way:

Step 1: Visit the official website of the MoRTH

Step 2: At the bottom of the page, on the right side, click on “Choice Number” and you will be redirected to the next page

Step 3: Next, you will have to choose your state and RTO

Step 4: You will get the list of available fancy numbers

E-auction of fancy registration numbers

As mentioned above, the registration charges for acquiring a fancy number for cars and bikes are different from state to state. Given below are the steps for the e-auction of fancy registration numbers in Delhi. While the charges and the exact process may vary in other states, it will give you a fair idea of the e-auction process:

Step 1: Visit the official website of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) and register yourself as a user. You will get a Unique Acknowledgement Number (UAN)

Step 2: Pay the registration fee, which is non-refundable in Delhi, and the fancy number reservation fee

Step 3: To block the number, select the number of your choice from the available numbers

Step 4: The registration window for the chosen number will be open for three days, starting from the day of the e-auction. In the subsequent two days, the bidding will be done

Step 5: For categories 1 to 4, you can change the bid in multiples of Rs 10,000. For the last category, you can do the bidding in multiple of Rs 1,000

Step 6: The one who gets the reserved number is informed through SMS and email

Step 7: Within 5 days of the declaration of the allotment, you must deposit the balance amount

Step 8: After the payment of the balance deposit, the allotment letter of the VIP car number will be generated

How to select a VIP registration number for cars and bikes

If you are planning to select a VIP car number as your vehicle registration number, you can do that online using the official website of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. The ministry has introduced the system of e-auction of fancy numbers which has made the process even easier. Using the e-auction process, you can register, block, bid, and get the VIP car number or fancy bike number plate of your choice.

How long does it take to get the fancy number plate?

To get the fancy number plate for your car or bike, it usually takes five days starting the day of registration. Once you have completed the registration process, the documents are verified. After that, the e-auction starts on the third day. The bidding, however, starts on the fourth day and ends on the fifth day. If your bid is selected and you get the fancy number, then after the payment of the balance amount, the allotment letter is generated. From the day the allotment letter is generated, you will have a window of 90 days to get your car or bike registered with your selected choice number at the RTO.


What are the components of a vehicle number?

The first part of a vehicle number comprises two letters that indicate the state where the vehicle has been registered—TN for Tamil Nādu, KA for Karnataka, JH for Jharkhand, KL for Kerala, and likewise. The next part consists of two digits indicating the vehicle’s corresponding RTO. The third part could be either two digits or two letters. This part is different for different vehicles. The last part is the unique registration number of the vehicle.

What are the types of vehicle number plates?

Below are the different types of vehicle number plates:

  • A white number plate is used for non-commercial private cars
  • A yellow number plate is for commercial use vehicles
  • A green number plate is for electric vehicles
  • Apart from the aforementioned, military vehicles and that of the President and Governor have unique number plates

What is the validity of the fancy registration number allotment letter?

The allotment letter for the fancy registration number remains valid for 90 days. You will have to get your car or bike registered within these 90 days.

Will my insurance premium get affected if I opt for a fancy number?

Usually, your vehicle’s registration number does not affect your bike insurance premium. If you have a valid, RTO-allotted fancy number, you do not have to worry about increased insurance costs.

I wish to get a VIP number. Will I have to participate in an auction for it?

To get a VIP car number, you will have to bid for a fancy number of your choice from the available set of numbers in an e-auction.
