Whether you are buying your first car, upgrading to a used bike or switching to an electric vehicle in Gujarat, understanding road tax matters. Paying the correct tax keeps your vehicle legal, helps you avoid fines and ensures smooth ownership. It also affects your overall budget when buying a vehicle.

This guide will explain the rates for different vehicles, how to pay road tax online or at the RTO and what to do if you miss a payment so you can stay compliant and stress free.

How is road tax calculated in Gujarat?

Road tax in Gujarat is calculated based on your vehicle’s ex-showroom price. For cars costing up to ₹6 lakh, the tax rate is 6%. Vehicles priced between ₹6 lakh and ₹10 lakh are taxed at 8% and cars above ₹10 lakh are charged up to 12%.

This is usually a one-time payment at the time of registration. Electric vehicles benefit from a lower rate of around 1% until 2026 to encourage cleaner transportation.

Road tax on four-wheelers in Gujarat

In the state of Gujarat, road tax is based on a vehicle's ex-showroom price. The RTO tax for a new car in Gujarat can be anywhere between 6% and 12% of the vehicle's purchase price. For instance, the tax applicable may total 6% if your car costs up to INR 6 lakh and it may reach 12% if it costs more than INR 10 lakh.

The road tax in Gujarat for second-hand cars must be paid in the same manner regardless of the vehicle’s age and current value. However, the tax rates may be lower. At the time of vehicle registration, new car registration charges in Gujarat must also be paid. Car insurance, which guards against probable collisions or damage, is also required to be maintained by vehicle owners.

Types of road tax in Gujarat

The types of road tax in Gujarat vary based on the vehicle category and usage, and they are mostly calculated as a percentage of the vehicle's cost. Key types include:

Here are the complete one-by-one steps that can guide you to pay your road tax online:

Step 1: Visit the official Parivahan Sewa website (parivahan.gov.in).

Step 2: Go to “Online Services” and select “Vehicle Related Services.”

Penalty for non-payment of road tax

If road tax is not paid on time in Gujarat, a penalty of 18% is applied on the due amount after three months. For example, if the tax is ₹10,000 and payment is delayed beyond three months, you will owe ₹11,800.

Late payment can also lead to fines, legal issues and your vehicle may be prohibited from use until the tax is cleared.

Validity and renewal process of road tax

In Gujarat, road tax for private vehicles is paid once at registration and is valid for 15 years. After this period, it must be renewed every 5 years along with the vehicle’s registration certificate (RC), subject to fitness approval.

Renewal process:

  • Renew every 5 years after the initial 15-year validity.
  • Online: Log in to the Parivahan portal, pay the tax, book a vehicle fitness inspection and download the receipt.
  • Offline: Submit Form 25 with the required documents at the RTO, pay the fees and complete the vehicle inspection.

Required documents: Form 25, RC, pollution certificate, valid insurance policy, tax proof, fitness certificate and ID.

To avoid penalties, start the RC renewal process at least 60 days before expiry.
