Types of Passports in India
The following are the types of passports that Indian authorities issue to the country’s citizens:

Ordinary passport:
This is also known as the type “P” passport and is the standard passport issued to Indian citizens for general travel purposes. It consists of 36/60 pages. The type P passport holds varying validity periods for adults and minors. This passport is typically valid for 10 years for adults, calculated from the issue date. This decade-long duration provides a considerable window for individuals to travel internationally. Meanwhile, the passport validity for minors is distinctively different. For individuals under 18, the passport's validity is restricted to five years or until they reach the age of 18, whichever occurs earlier.

Diplomat passport:
This passport type is issued to designated members authorised by the Government of India. Ordinarily, applications for diplomatic passports are processed exclusively at the Passport Sewa Programme (PSP) Division at Patiala House in New Delhi. However, individuals also have the option to submit their applications at the Passport Office affiliated with their current residential address to facilitate convenience. In terms of design, diplomatic passports appear different from ordinary passports. Diplomat passports are maroon in colour.
To be eligible for a diplomatic passport in India, an individual must meet the following conditions:
- Officials serving with Branch A of the Indian Foreign Services
- Chosen officers operating under Branch B of the Indian Foreign Services
- Officials employed by the Ministry of External Affairs requiring international travel for official purposes
- The daughter, son, spouse, official hostess, or parents of the qualified official (as officially acknowledged by the Ministry of External Affairs)
- Individuals possessing diplomatic status

White passport:
The white passport is designated for individuals representing the Indian Government during official travel engagements. It is issued explicitly to those individuals undertaking official journeys on behalf of the Indian Government. It serves as an acknowledgment of their official status and facilitates seamless international travel while on government work. As the name suggests, a white passport has a white cover. IAS officers, Indian Police Service officers, etc, usually hold this type of passport.

Orange passport:
This passport type was first issued in 2018 by the Indian government. Only those who have yet to complete their education after 10th grade are eligible for this. An orange passport does not contain the address page. The primary objective behind introducing a distinct passport type was to enhance the safety of less-educated citizens during international travel. This new system expedites the Emigration Check Required (ECR) verification and other emigration procedures, streamlining the process for a quicker and more efficient experience.
