Types of disc brake fluids

The following are the types of disc brake fluid:

DOT 3 brake fluid

DOT 3 is a glycol-based brake fluid used in standard vehicles. Its moderate boiling point makes it suitable for regular driving conditions. DOT 3 brake fluid is readily available and comparatively affordable, making it a popular choice.

DOT 4 brake fluid

The DOT 4 brake fluid is also glycol-based but with a higher boiling point compared with DOT 3. This makes it more suitable for vehicles that experience heavy braking, such as sports cars. It is slightly more expensive than DOT 4 and requires periodic replacement.

DOT 5 brake fluid

DOT 5 is a silicone-based brake fluid that does not absorb moisture. This makes it ideal for vintage cars, which are usually stored for a longer period. The liquid is non-corrosive but incompatible with ABS systems and other glycol-based fluids.

DOT 5.1 brake fluid

DOT 5.1 is a glycol-based fluid with a high boiling point, similar to DOT 5. It is compatible with ABS systems, has superior thermal stability, and sustains braking performance under extreme conditions. It requires frequent monitoring and replacement due to its hygroscopic nature.

Mineral oil brake fluid

Mineral oil-based brake fluid is used in certain bicycles and specialised vehicles. It is non-corrosive, does not absorb moisture, and offers long-lasting performance. Mineral oil fluids are typically reserved for niche applications and do not apply to standard automobiles.
