A driving license holds a lot of significance in India. It is not only the legal document that certifies that an individual is eligible for driving, but it also is a valid identity proof across India. The driving license is issued and administered by the Regional Transport Authority/Office of various states or Union Territories across the country. Though the respective state authorities publish them, they have a fairly standard procedure overall.

A license obtained under a particular RTO is valid throughout India. The driving license is valid up to 20 years from the date of issuance or until the license holder attains 50 years of age, whichever condition is met first.
