Transport and RTO offices across the country provide duplicate licenses to those who have lost or had their licenses stolen.

What are the steps to be followed to get a duplicate license if you have lost a driving license?

Go to the police station and register a first information report (FIR). Take the FIR report to the local RTO office. Download a copy of the application form LLD available at the local RTO office. Fill it up and attach a copy of your aadhar card, passport size photographs, and age proof documents for reference.

Challan clearance report will have to be applied separately and submitted.

Also make sure to take your old driving license in case the old copy is torn or destroyed.

The exact series of steps are as under:

• Go to the RTO. Make sure that you take 3 passport-sized photos, copy of the F.I.R and the affidavit with you.
• Go to the enquiry counter at the RTO and collect the application form for a duplicate license.
• Complete the application form and submit it at the Driving License Branch along with the other documents.
• After this, you will have to go through the Biometrics section. Here, your photo will be clicked and thumb print will be taken.
• You will have to pay a certain amount of fee for the new DL Book or the Smart Card.
• Once you get your new driving license, make a laminated copy of it. If you have a duplicate copy of your license, it will be easy for the RTO to track your details using your DL number.
• Go to the RTO. Carry three passport sized photographs, copy of the FIR and the affidavit with you.
• Go to the enquiry counter at the RTO. Collect the application form for a duplicate license.
• Complete the application form and submit it at the driving license branch along with other documents.
• Once you have done this, you will need to go to the biometrics section, have your photo clicked and your thumb print will be taken.

When should one register with the RTO?

Anyone buying a car should immediately register with the RTO. One can get a temporary registration immediately after buying a car. A permanent registration can be taken within a month after buying a vehicle. Also buy car insurance as it protects you from the claim arising out of the accidents involving third parties.

What is a temporary RTO number?

The RTO officer gives a new vehicle a temporary RTO number. It looks the same as a permanent number but has the alphabets “TR” or the word “TEMP” written in bold.

How to get the temporary RTO number?

There are two ways to get a temporary number:

• The dealership which issues the car also provides you the temporary RTO number. This is usually obtained within a few hours after the purchase of a vehicle.
• You will need to fill the RTO form. Along with that you need to attach the following documents.

- Copy of Address Proof
- Copy of insurance certificate
- Copy of sales certificate Form 21
- Pollution under control certificate.
- Temporary registration form C.R.Tem.
- Copy of roadworthiness certificate (22 and 22A)

• There is another way to get a temporary RTO number. It is through the online method. You can use vahan portal (https://vahan.nic.in/nrservices/) to register the RTO number.

How to get the permanent RTO number?

• The owner has to fill and submit the application form or Form 20 to the registering authority
• In case, the owner of the vehicle has obtained a temporary registration number of the vehicle, the permanent registration number must be obtained before the temporary registration number expires (usually one month).
• If the procedure of permanent registration of the vehicle requires hypothecation, then the owner has to produce the necessary documents
• Next step involves the owner selecting the permanent registration number for the motor vehicle.
• The owner has to decide the usage of HSRP/smart card that is required.
• Next, the owner of the vehicle that is to be registered has to pay the fees applicable as per Rule 81 of Central Motor Vehicles Rule, 1989. The fees levied by the registering authority will depend on the type and series of permanent registration number selected and the usage of HSRP/smart card by the owner.

Other services provided by Vahan: There are multiple other uses of Vahan portal as well. It can be used to get a renewal permit, fitness certificate, transfer of ownership of vehicles, etc.

Traffic Rules. Something that all of us are expected to follow unconditionally because following them saves our lives. Traffic Rules Violations. Something all of us do, despite knowing that we are risking our own lives by doing so. The national capital, Delhi, has more than 7.35 million cars. However, traffic rules or rather following traffic rules has never been Delhi’s strong suit. Between 16th to 31st August 2019, 3,48,272 challans were issued in Delhi. In India, more than 150,000 people are killed each year in traffic accidents. That’s about 400 fatalities a day and far higher than developed auto markets like the US, which in 2016 logged about 40,000.

The government is attempting to curb the road rage on Indian roads, caused by everything from speeding two-wheelers to cars not equipped with airbags. On September 1, the government implemented the new Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019, having 63 clauses to manage some of the most common traffic violations in the country.

2.Driving without a licence.

3.Driving without a helmet:

Driving a two-wheeler without a helmet puts the passengers at major risk and will fetch you a fine of Rs 1,000 and suspend the driver's license for 3 months.

4.Driving without a seat belt :

Whether you are sitting in front or driving or even sitting at the rear seat, you will have to give a challan Rs.1,000 to the Delhi traffic Police if found without the seat belt strapped on. Additionally, a 2 Hour Counselling Session will also be required to be taken from the designated Traffic Police Official on the Importance of a Seat Belt while travelling in a motor vehicle.

5.Violation of air pollution standards(emitting excessive black smoke on the roads):

With the rising levels of pollution in the capital and people becoming more and more prone to lung diseases and having breathing problems, it is imperative that everyone gets their cars checked for pollution. Delhi RTO is trying to ensure that this happens. As per the traffic rules in Delhi :

Driving without getting your car checked for pollution will cost you Rs. 10,000 and driving without a PUC(pollution certificate) copy will fetch you a fine of Rs 1,000.

6.Jumping red lights

Jumping red lights is one of the most common traffic violations. Apparently, this is the one traffic rule in Delhi or elsewhere which people have trouble adhering to, even though all it requires you to do is to be patient.

Accidents caused by drivers who ran red lights killed 939 people in 2017, the most recent year crash data was recorded, a 28% increase since 2012, according to the AAA.

The fine for jumping a red light is Rs.1,000.

If you are getting late, the easy solution seems to be to simply jump a red light. At least this is what the motorists in Delhi seem to be thinking. After all everyone is doing it and the red light cross fine in Delhi is only Rs 100. This drastic change in treatment by the Delhi RTO is because of the realization that jumping a red light is far from being a harmless little mistake and causes real loss of lives. They have also realized that an increase in the signal jump fine or the signal break fine is the only real way of tackling this issue.

A registration certificate carries the same significance as that of a driving license. A registration certificate proves that you have registered your vehicle with the RTO. Once an RC (registration certificate) gets lost, you will have to quickly get a duplicate RC.

What are the steps to follow to get a duplicate Registration Certificate Book?

There are two main ways to get a duplicate RC Book: one way is the offline method and the other way is the online method.

How to get a duplicate Registration Certificate Book via the offline method?

There are a few major steps to be followed.

• File an FIR with the local police station: This should be the first step once you have lost your RC Book. File a complaint with the local police. Mention everything about the vehicle: the make and model, owner details, chassis number, engine number, and registration number. Take 5 or 6 copies of the FIR and take it with you to the local RTO office.
• Visit a local RTO centre and get an RC extract. First let us understand what is an RC extract. A citizen can get vehicle owner's information (RC-Extract) about registered transport vehicles, as well as, driving license through any of the RTO centres spread across the state.
• File an application for a duplicate RC. You can do this along with application of form 26. What is form 26?
• You need to get your vehicle financier to attest that you have purchased the vehicle on loan.

You have the option of taking 3 different routes from Delhi to Shimla. Each route has scenic views and excellent places to visit along the way.

Route 1 – Ambala Route:

Delhi – Sonipat – Panipat – Karnal – Ambala – Pinjore – Kasauli – Shimla

It is an 8 hour journey and is approximately 486 kilometres. It is possibly the shortest route to Shimla. The highway corridor is rife with activity and there are multiple locations that you can choose as a pit stop to enjoy the cool breeze and sights. The journey takes you on NH44 to NH152 and then NH5. Stick to using GPS so that you reach within the estimated time.

Route 2 – Yamunanagar Route:

Delhi – Sonipat – Panipat – Karnal – Yamunanagar – Solan – Chail – Shimla

It takes roughly 11 hours and 24 minutes, and the distance is approximately 452 kilometres to drive to reach Shimla via this route. It is the most thrilling roads for nature lovers and wildlife connoisseurs. It takes you through highways NH44 and NH5. Enthusiasts can visit two wildlife sanctuaries en route.

Route 3 – Dehradun Route:

Delhi – Ghaziabad – Modinagar – Meerut – Muzzafarnagar – Dehradun – Kolar – Barog – Shimla

This route is a roughly 12-hour journey, and is 482 kilometres in distance. The trip is longer than the other options outlined. However, it takes you through mountains and hilly winding roads and exciting places to explore en route. This route will take you through NH344 and NH 7.

You can head west on Grand Road towards Balagandi Road and then take a U-turn at Medical Square. At the roundabout take the 2nd exit and stay on Puri-Konark Marine Drive for about 21 kilometres. Turn right onto Konark-Puri Road. Here you will pass by Maa Jogeshwari Temple Godhan Pada. After 850 meters, turn left onto Konark-Kakatpur Road. Turn right onto Gop-Sanakundura-Kuruma-Banakhandi-Konark Road and drive for 550 meters. Turn right and then turn left and pass by Jagan Variety Store and arrive at Konark. Once you reach Konark, you can undertake a day trip to Pipli. Take a good night’s rest and begin sight-seeing at Konark. You can head back to Puri via the Puri-Konark Marine Drive after staying at Konark for a day or two.

If you are the kind of person who prefers solitude, you may want to hit the road between February and June or October and November. Goa is the cheapest during the monsoons so that could also be an option.

There is a famous saying in Konkan “Prodham Bhookt, magi mookt” which roughly translates to “You cannot think wisely until you are well fed”. Some of the famous places where you can get local delicacies are Starlight which serves a delectable Fish Thali. It is also recommended to eat at Laxmi Family restaurant for a filling experience. Crab curry and grilled crabs with some local authentic spices.

Goa is about 600 kilometers from Mumbai and it takes about 11 hours to reach if you drive without stopping.

From Mumbai, take the Mumbai Pune Highway. Once you have exited that highway, continue with the Bengaluru-Mumbai Highway for another 500 kilometers. Continue with NH48, AH47, NH748 to Khanapur. The entire route looks like

Aguada Fort: This ancient fort has been standing through ages and has seen the test of times. It was built in 1612 and still stands strong. The architecture gives a good glimpse of the Portuguese style of built and boasts some amazing views of goa.

Bom Jesus Basilica: This central landmark is one of the most important places to visit in Goa. Here, the incorrupt body of St Francis Xavier is kept. There is also a gallery of modern art in the Basilica.

Club Cubana: “Nightclub in the Sky” as it is well known as, is located in a remote location in North Goa.  It is on the top of Arpora Hill. One of the great attractions for party people, you might be able to find your rhythm here. Although a nightclub, it has some restrictions. It is open only from October to April. It usually caters to couples. Stag entries are not preferred. Ladies, on the other hand, are most welcome.

Flea Markets: Goa has some famous flea markets. A couple of them include the Wednesday afternoon Anjuna market and the Saturday night market. These are great places to shop and test your bargaining skills.

Dona Paula: This former village is now a tourist destination. The National Institute of Oceanography is located here.

Orange Restaurant: In the easternmost state, this restaurant is like an oasis for food lovers. The service is efficient and the food is delicious. You will enjoy your meals even further when good music fills up the room.

Dragon Restaurant: It is said that, if you wish to savour the local dishes with the earthy regional taste, this is the place to be. There is a famous dish here called Churpi and we highly recommend you to try it.

Mon-Valley: This restaurant is located in a nice and airy region of Tawang. Try the Momos here. They are supposed to be really good.

Woodland Restaurant: Sit at the back corner in this restaurant and enjoy the beautiful sight of the Tawang monastery while you enjoy your meal. The restaurant serves a good selection of soups and local dishes without burning your pocket.

Getting to Tawang from Guwahati, you have two options. Both routes take approximately the same time and cover a similar distance of about 500 kilometres.

Route:1 This route goes through NH13 and is slightly shorter.

Guwahati Baihata Sipajhar Kalaigaon Bhairabkund Kalaktang Rupa Rahung Marmang Tawang.

Route: 2 This route avoids traffic and can be taken if you want to have a relaxed, smooth drive.

Guwahati Khetri Nagaon Kaliabor Tezpur Balipara Bhalukpong Bomdila Dirang Marmang Tawang.

What to Eat and Stopovers

During your trip, there are multiple destinations where you can halt, explore the nearby attractions and then continue on your journey. Some of the well-known stopover points are.

Tezpur: On a relaxed, well timed trip, you can halt at Tezpur for the first night. It is a bustling commercial center. While you are there, and if time permits, do take a walk along the Brahmaputra, a wide river which is also calm. A perfect walk to end the first day in peace.

Nameri National Park: Another beautiful destination to park your car for the night. Not only is the park very diverse, but there are also multiple staying options. While you are there, try to get a tour by the forest guards. You can stay at the Eco Camps or a lodge or a resort.

Dirang: Dirang is a perfect stop for a small holiday or a relaxed night. It's a small hill station which comprises of an old settlement and a new town. While you are there, the hilltop fort should be on your list. You can find small hotels both in the old settlement as well as in the new town.

While you are travelling, try and consume light meals. If you are staying in high-end accommodation, you may experiment with the food but otherwise, stick to the basics.

Bap Teng Kang Waterfalls: Bap Teng Kang Waterfalls is located at around 80 kilometres from Tawang but is totally worth a visit. It is popularly known as the “BTK Falls”.

Jaswant Garh: Not many people fight for their motherland until their last breath. Jaswant Singh was one such brave soldier. Jaswant Singh Rawat, of the Indian Army, held this post against the Indo-China war in 1962. He stood at this position for 3 long days at an altitude of 10,000 feet. Something we can't even imagine of doing. Today, Jaswant Garh stands tall as our gratitude to the brave soul.
