Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) will provide accidental and health insurance cover to the students of primary municipal schools. Around 40,000 students in 130 schools will be covered in the current academic year.
As per Nivrutti Shinde, Chairman, PCMC School Board, most students in primary municipal schools are the children of daily wage earners. In the case of an accident or unnatural incident, their parents cannot afford the treatment costs at private hospitals.
With an insurance cover of `1 lakh, students can avail better medical facilities at private hospitals. The school board has already made a provision of ` 20 lakh for the year 2016-17 and will extend it to ` 25 lakh for the next.
The school board wants to implement the scheme from December. Selection of the insurance company for implementing the scheme will be done through a bidding process.
The decision came after a 15-year-old student of a municipal school in Pimpri died in a fight with classmates due to teacher’s negligence. The aggrieved parents demanded a compensation of ` 2 lakh from PCMC which the civic body had to provide for last year.
