These are the devices that can make your home ‘smart’
Seeing all those smart homes in sci-fi movies might have got you thinking if that’s all possible in real life. Having the door open by itself, just verbalising what information you need (and getting it), and a vacuum cleaner that works by itself. All of this may seem from the future, but in reality, they are smart devices already available and ready to enter your home.
Amazon Echo
Technically a Bluetooth speaker that doubles up as a digital assistant for your home. It works through voice recognition and offers hands-free controls for a seamless experience. The Echo can read out news, information, weather reports and more by connecting to Amazon’s intelligent cloud service called Alexa Voice Service. Not only that, it can also be used to play music, read audiobooks, control other enabled devices and even set alarms or reminders.
Nest Protect
The next generation of smoke detectors. This carbon monoxide and smoke detector speaks up in a friendly voice, if it senses something is wrong. If you’re aware of the origin of smoke and want to silence the alarm, all you need to do is access the smartphone app and just tap. Once connected to Wi-Fi, Nest Protect will also be able to send alerts and battery low warnings to your phone.
Belkin WeMo Switch
The Belkin WeMo Switch lets you control lights and appliances from anywhere in the world, through the free smartphone app. It is compatible with an Amazon Alexa device and can be managed through voice control as well. It also acts as a deterrent for thieves in “Away Mode” by randomly turning some lights on and off, making it look to potential intruders like somebody is home.
August Smart Lock
This is pure indulgence – a device that lets you remotely control a door lock? Truly an extremely niche offering that will resonate with a select few. The Smart Lock is easy to install and doesn’t need the help of vast modifications. It allows you to remotely grant access to someone into your home, without you even being there. This device is sure to take your home’s smartness quotient up a notch.
Roomba 980
Roomba 980 is the latest addition to the line of semi-autonomous robot vacuum cleaners. Equipped with the iAdapt 2.0 Navigation with visual localisation, it is able to navigate and clean an entire level of your home. With the smartphone app you can even command the robot vacuum to start cleaning or schedule a cleaning program.
