Insurance Schemes for Mumbai Local Train Commuters by IRCTC

September 10 2016
The IRCTC plans to provide insurance to commuters

The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) is planning to roll out its optional travel insurance to local train commuters in the city of Mumbai.

The IRCTC is encouraged by the enthusiastic response of rail commuters towards the optional travel plan for its e-ticket holders. The scheme, which was launched on September 2nd 2016, saw 7,30,000 passengers apply in just 40 hours of its introduction.

An IRCTC official said that they were seriously thinking about extending the insurance service to local train travellers in Mumbai. The chairman and MD of the IRCTC Mr. A K Manocha stated that they were working out the details about the premium but it won’t be too different from the existing figure.

The current insurance scheme offers train passengers or their families, compensation of up to ₹10 lakh in the event of death, or permanent total disability, or ₹7.5 lakh for permanent partial disability at a premium of just 92 paise.

Considering that nearly 70 lakh people commute via Mumbai’s suburban train network daily, with an average of 10 rail-related deaths every day, this scheme is expected to see a huge response when launched.
